A '''non-stop flight''' is a [flight](/source/flight) by an [aircraft](/source/aircraft) with no intermediate stops, as opposed to a [direct flight](/source/direct_flight), which is any flight with no change in flight number, but which may include one or more stops.

==History==
During the early age of aviation industry when aircraft range was limited, most flights were served in the form of a [milk run](/source/milk_run), meaning there were many stops along the route.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Cosgrove |first=Cole |date=2015-06-11 |title=The Milk Run is a hop, skip and a jump along Southeast Alaska's coast |url=https://news.alaskaair.com/alaska-airlines/the-milk-run-flight/ |access-date=2024-06-11 |website=Alaska Airlines News |language=en-US}}</ref> But as aviation technology developed and aircraft capability improved, non-stop flights began to take over and have now become a dominant form of flight in the modern times.

The [dissolution of the Soviet Union](/source/dissolution_of_the_Soviet_Union) in 1991 eventually opened up Russian airspace, allowing commercial airlines to exploit new circum[polar route](/source/polar_route)s and enabling many new non-stop services, removing the need of making stopover in-between.<ref name=Russia>{{cite news | url=https://www.nytimes.com/2001/03/30/opinion/from-newark-over-the-north-pole.html | title=From Newark Over the North Pole | work=The New York Times | date=30 March 2001 | access-date=2016-04-01}}</ref>

In the late 2000s to early 2010s, rising fuel prices coupled with the [2008 financial crisis](/source/2008_financial_crisis) resulted in cancellation of many ultra-long haul non-stop flights.<ref name="689a1618">[https://www.ft.com/content/689a1618-814d-11e5-8095-ed1a37d1e096 A new era of 'ultra-long-haul' aviation]</ref> As fuel prices fell and aircraft became more economical the economic viability of ultra long haul flights improved.<ref name="689a1618" />

[Direct flight](/source/Direct_flight)s and non-stop flights are often confused with each other. Starting 31 March 2019, [American Airlines](/source/American_Airlines) started offering non-stop flights from [Phoenix, Arizona](/source/Phoenix%2C_Arizona) to London, England,<ref>{{cite web |url=http://chamberbusinessnews.com/2019/04/01/american-airlines-first-flight-between-phoenix-and-london-takes-off/ |title=American Airlines first flight between Phoenix and London takes off|access-date= 1 April 2019 |publisher=Chamber Business News |date= 1 April 2019}}</ref> meaning that the plane leaves [Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport](/source/Phoenix_Sky_Harbor_International_Airport) and lands at [Heathrow Airport](/source/Heathrow_Airport). Conversely, a [direct flight](/source/direct_flight) simply means that passengers typically would not get off the plane if it stops (lands) at a location between the two cities.
