Presbyter of the church of Asia Minor about AD 230

**Noetus** ([Greek](/source/Greek_language): Νοητός) was a presbyter of the church of [Asia Minor](/source/Asia_Minor) about AD 230. He was a native of [Smyrna](/source/Smyrna), where (or perhaps in [Ephesus](/source/Ephesus)) he became a prominent representative of the particular type of [Christology](/source/Christology) now called [modalistic monarchianism](/source/Modalistic_monarchianism) or [patripassianism](/source/Patripassianism).[1][2]

His views, which led to his excommunication by local [presbyters](/source/Presbyter), are known chiefly through the writings of [Hippolytus](/source/Hippolytus_(writer)), his contemporary at [Rome](/source/Rome), where he settled and had a large following. He accepted the [fourth Gospel](/source/Gospel_of_John), but regarded its statements about the [Logos](/source/Logos) as [allegorical](/source/Allegory). His disciple Cleomenes held that God is both invisible and visible; as visible He is the Son.[2]

The Catholic Encyclopedia notes: "It is true that it is easy to suppose Tertullian and Hippolytus to have misrepresented the opinions of their opponents".[3]
