**Noel Hegarty** is an Irish former [Gaelic footballer](/source/Gaelic_football) who played for [Naomh Columba](/source/CLG_Naomh_Columba) and the [Donegal county team](/source/Donegal_county_football_team).

He played as a defender.[1] According to *[The Irish Times](/source/The_Irish_Times)*, centre back was his best position.[2]

Hegarty made his championship debut for Donegal in 1991.[1] He was a member of Donegal's [1992](/source/1992_All-Ireland_Senior_Football_Championship_Final) All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winning team. He started at left corner back in the 1992 All-Ireland Final as Donegal defeated [Dublin](/source/Dublin_county_football_team) by a scoreline of 0–18 to 0–14. He and [Tony Boyle](/source/Tony_Boyle_(Gaelic_footballer)) were the least experienced of Donegal's men on the pitch that day.[1]

Hegarty broke his nose in the final of the [1994–95 National Football League](/source/1994%E2%80%9395_National_Football_League_(Ireland)).[3] He [captained](/source/Captain_(Gaelic_games)) his county in 1996.[2] He started [Mickey Moran](/source/Mickey_Moran)'s first game in charge of Donegal, a league win at home to [Offaly](/source/Offaly_county_football_team) in October 2000.[4]

With Naomh Columba, he won one [Donegal Senior Football Championship](/source/Donegal_Senior_Football_Championship) title in 1990.

He is from [Glencolmcille](/source/Glencolmcille).[1] His brother [Paddy](/source/Paddy_Hegarty) also played for Donegal.[5]

He has been player–manager with his native club.[1] He has also worked with the club's underage teams.[6]

It was mentioned to me last week that it was 25 years since Donegal dethroned Down in the preliminary round of the Ulster Championship… PJ McGowan had taken over from Brian McEniff at that stage… It's funny looking back now because we had played the League final against Derry the week before and lost… We were very poor that day and Noel Hegarty broke his nose too which was far from ideal.
