Cox was raised in Auckland, New Zealand.[1] He is an advocate of the [monarchy in New Zealand](/source/Monarchy_in_New_Zealand).[2]

## Career

Cox earned an [LLB](/source/Bachelor_of_Laws) and an [LLM](/source/Master_of_Laws) degree from the [University of Auckland](/source/University_of_Auckland), an [MTh](/source/Master_of_Theology) degree, an [MA](/source/Master_of_Arts) degree in ecclesiastical law, an [LTh](/source/Licence_in_Theology) from the [University of Wales Lampeter](/source/University_of_Wales_Lampeter), and a [PhD](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) degree in Political Studies from the University of Auckland. His doctoral thesis was titled *The evolution of the New Zealand monarchy: The recognition of an autochthonous polity*.[3][4] His main field of research has been constitutional law. In 2004 he was elected a [Fellow of the Royal Historical Society](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Historical_Society) (FRHistS) for his work on Commonwealth jurisprudence.[1]

Starting in 2010 he was a professor and Head of the Department of Law and Criminology at [Aberystwyth University](/source/Aberystwyth_University), Wales,[5] but was dismissed on May 22, 2014, due to alleged breaches of University financial and data protection regulations, and according to a statement by the university, a breach of the University's duty of care towards a member of staff.[2]

He was ordained as a deacon in the [Church in Wales](/source/Church_in_Wales) in June 2012 and a priest in June 2013.[6]
