'''Noah Lindsey Beery''' (August 10, 1913 – November 1, 1994) was an American actor often specializing in warm, friendly character roles similar to many portrayed by his [Oscar](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Actor)-winning uncle, [Wallace Beery](/source/Wallace_Beery). Unlike his more famous uncle, however, Beery Jr. seldom broke away from playing supporting roles. Active as an actor in films or television for well over half a century, he was best known for playing [James Garner](/source/James_Garner)'s character's father, Joseph "Rocky" Rockford, in the [NBC](/source/National_Broadcasting_Company) television series ''[The Rockford Files](/source/The_Rockford_Files)'' (1974–1980). His father, [Noah Beery](/source/Noah_Beery), enjoyed a similarly lengthy film career as a supporting actor in major films, although the elder Beery was also frequently a [leading man](/source/leading_man) during the [silent film](/source/silent_film) era.

Beery was born in New York City, New York, where his father was working as a stage actor. He was given his nickname "Pidge" by [George M. Cohan](/source/George_M._Cohan)'s sister Josie.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.nytimes.com/movies/person/4984/Noah-Beery-Jr-/biography|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141029203846/http://www.nytimes.com/movies/person/4984/Noah-Beery-Jr-/biography|url-status=dead|archive-date=October 29, 2014|department=Movies & TV Dept.|work=[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)|author=Hal Erickson|author-link=Hal Erickson (author)|date=2014|title=Noah Beery Jr.|access-date=October 23, 2014}}</ref>

The family moved to California in 1915 when his father began acting in motion pictures. After attending school in Los Angeles, they moved to a ranch in the [San Fernando Valley](/source/San_Fernando_Valley), a style of living he would maintain for the rest of his life.{{citation needed|date=March 2018}}

At the age of seven, he appeared with his father in ''[The Mark of Zorro](/source/The_Mark_of_Zorro_(1920_film))'' and like his father, who immediately began billing himself as "Noah Beery Sr.", he went on to become a respected character actor. His paternal uncle, [Oscar](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Actor)-winning actor [Wallace Beery](/source/Wallace_Beery), became the world's highest-paid actor by 1932. Although neither Beery Jr. nor his father ever approached that level, both had long and memorable acting careers. The three acting Beerys physically closely resembled each other, but Noah Beery Jr. lacked the powerful voice his father and uncle possessed.{{citation needed|date=November 2024}}

Beery appeared in dozens of films, including a large early role as [John Wayne](/source/John_Wayne)'s action partner in ''[The Trail Beyond](/source/The_Trail_Beyond)'' (1934; Wayne was 27 years old and Beery was 21), ''[Only Angels Have Wings](/source/Only_Angels_Have_Wings)'' (1939) with [Cary Grant](/source/Cary_Grant), ''[20 Mule Team](/source/20_Mule_Team_(1940_film))'' (1940) with his uncle Wallace Beery, and ''[Red River](/source/Red_River_(1948_film))'' (1948), again with John Wayne as well as [Montgomery Clift](/source/Montgomery_Clift).

Beery's early television work included a weekly stint as Joey the Clown in ''[Circus Boy](/source/Circus_Boy)'' with [Micky Dolenz](/source/Micky_Dolenz) in the mid-1950s. In 1960, Beery replaced [Burt Reynolds](/source/Burt_Reynolds) as the co-starring sidekick on ''[Riverboat](/source/Riverboat_(TV_series))'', an [NBC](/source/NBC) [Western](/source/Western_(genre)) series starring [Darren McGavin](/source/Darren_McGavin).

He appeared once on the religion anthology series ''[Crossroads](/source/Crossroads_(1955_TV_series))'' and on [Walter Brennan](/source/Walter_Brennan)'s [ABC](/source/American_Broadcasting_Company) sitcom, ''[The Real McCoys](/source/The_Real_McCoys)''. He guest-starred three times on the long-running NBC Western series ''[The Virginian](/source/The_Virginian_(TV_series))'' in the 1960s, and twice during the same era on ''[Wagon Train](/source/Wagon_Train)''. In 1965, he made two guest appearances on ''[Perry Mason](/source/Perry_Mason_(1957_TV_series))'' ("The Case of the Golden Venom" and "The Case of the Hasty Honeymooner").

Beery portrayed the buckskin-clad recurring [sidekick](/source/sidekick) character "Buffalo Baker" in the 17-episode 1967 television series ''[Hondo](/source/Hondo_(TV_series))'' starring [Ralph Taeger](/source/Ralph_Taeger), a role played by [Ward Bond](/source/Ward_Bond) in the original [3D](/source/3D_film) [John Wayne film](/source/Hondo_(film)). In 1970 Beery appeared as Will Baxter on the TV western ''[The Virginian](/source/The_Virginian_(TV_series)).'' But Beery remains best known for his role as Joseph "Rocky" Rockford, the amiable but occasionally cantankerous father of Jim Rockford, [James Garner](/source/James_Garner)'s character on ''[The Rockford Files](/source/The_Rockford_Files)'' (1974–1980).

==Personal life==
Beery Jr.'s first wife until 1966 was Maxine Jones, the only child of Western star [Buck Jones](/source/Buck_Jones). His second wife from 1968 until his death was Lisa (née Thorman). He had two daughters, Muffett and Melissa; a son, actor Bucklind Beery; and three step-children, Page and Sean Slattery<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1994/11/03/obituaries/noah-beery-jr-81-an-actor-known-for-playing-sidekicks.html|title=Noah Beery Jr., 81, an Actor Known for Playing Sidekicks|date=1994-11-03|newspaper=The New York Times|issn=0362-4331|access-date=2016-06-19}}</ref> and Lerena Barbe.

On February 8, 1960, he received a star located at 7047 [Hollywood Blvd.](/source/Hollywood_Boulevard) on the [Hollywood Walk of Fame](/source/Hollywood_Walk_of_Fame) for his contributions to the television industry.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.walkoffame.com/noah-beery-jr|title=Noah Beery Jr.|website=walkoffame.com|access-date=2016-06-19}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=http://projects.latimes.com/hollywood/star-walk/noah-beery-jr|title=Noah Beery Jr. profile|website=[Los Angeles Times](/source/Los_Angeles_Times)|access-date=2016-06-19}}</ref>
==Death==
Beery died on November 1, 1994, in [Tehachapi, California](/source/Tehachapi%2C_California) of a [cerebral thrombosis](/source/thrombus), aged 81.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-11-02-mn-57647-story.html|title=Noah Beery Jr.; Film, TV Character Actor|author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.-->|date=1994-11-02|last1=Wire Reports|newspaper=Los Angeles Times|issn=0458-3035|access-date=2016-06-19}}</ref> He was interred in [Forest Lawn Memorial Park](/source/Forest_Lawn_Memorial_Park_(Hollywood_Hills)).<ref>Wilson, Scott.
