**Nkandla Local Municipality** is an administrative area in the [King Cetshwayo District](/source/King_Cetshwayo_District_Municipality) of [KwaZulu-Natal](/source/KwaZulu-Natal) province in [South Africa](/source/South_Africa). The town of [Nkandla](/source/Nkandla%2C_KwaZulu-Natal) (seat of the municipality) is the home town of the former [President of South Africa](/source/President_of_South_Africa), [Jacob Zuma](/source/Jacob_Zuma).

Nkandla (Enqabeni Enkulu KwaZulu) is a [Zulu](/source/Zulu_language) name for a hiding place of the [Zulus](/source/Zulus) a long time ago during the times of war, e.g. the [Bambatha Rebellion](/source/Bambatha_Rebellion) and the [Ndwandwe war](/source/Ndwandwe_war) from [Entumeni](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Entumeni&action=edit&redlink=1). The warriors used the Nkandla forest as their last resort for protection from their enemies. It was very difficult to fight the warriors who were hiding in the thick and dark forest (iNkandla eMahlathi Amnyama). Most of the Zulu heroes' graves are found at Nkandla, for example, [Bambatha](/source/Bambatha)'s grave is at [Nsuze](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nsuze&action=edit&redlink=1).[3]

The municipal council consists of twenty-seven members elected by [mixed-member proportional representation](/source/Mixed-member_proportional_representation). Fourteen councillors are elected by [first-past-the-post voting](/source/First-past-the-post_voting) in fourteen [wards](/source/Ward_(South_Africa)), while the remaining thirteen are chosen from [party lists](/source/Party_list) so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received. In the [election of 3 August 2016](/source/South_African_municipal_election%2C_2016) the [Inkatha Freedom Party](/source/Inkatha_Freedom_Party) (IFP) won a majority of fifteen seats on the council.
