# Njunis

**Njunis** is a [mountain](/source/Mountain) in the interior of southern [Troms](/source/Troms) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The mountain lies in [Målselv Municipality](/source/M%C3%A5lselv_Municipality). With a peak at 1,713 metres (5,620 ft), it is the highest mountain in this part of the county, and has Norway's [thirteenth largest prominence](/source/List_of_mountains_in_Norway_by_prominence). The [tree line](/source/Tree_line) ([downy birch](/source/Downy_birch)) reaches to 700 metres (2,300 ft) elevation on the southern slope of the mountain, the highest tree line in Troms. This forest is part of the [Øvre Dividal National Park](/source/%C3%98vre_Dividal_National_Park). At the peak, [NATO](/source/NATO) has a [radar](/source/Radar) centre.[2]

## Name

The name ***njunis***, which means "prominent *[nose](/source/Nose)* of a mountain",[2] is derived from the [Northern Sami language](/source/Northern_Sami_language).
