**Nitzia Cecilia Scott** (born October 10, 1990),[2][3] known professionally as **Nitty Scott** (formerly known as **Nitty Scott, MC**), is an American rapper and [spoken word](/source/Spoken_word) poet. Raised in [Orlando, Florida](/source/Orlando%2C_Florida), she rose to prominence through her [freestyle](/source/Freestyle_rap) over [Kanye West](/source/Kanye_West)'s single "[Monster](/source/Monster_(Kanye_West_song))" (2010).[4] She has released three studio albums, which have received praise from [music critics](/source/Music_journalism), and performed at the [BET Hip Hop Awards](/source/BET_Hip_Hop_Awards) and [Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival](/source/The_Brooklyn_Hip-Hop_Festival). In 2016 she formed the group No Panty, with [Bodega Bamz](/source/Bodega_Bamz) and [Joell Ortiz](/source/Joell_Ortiz), and released the mixtape *Westside Highway Story*, produced by [Salaam Remi](/source/Salaam_Remi).

## Biography

Scott was born in [Michigan](/source/Michigan) and raised in [Orlando, Florida](/source/Orlando%2C_Florida).[2] Her mother is [Puerto Rican](/source/Puerto_Rican_people) and her father is [African American](/source/African_American) from [New Orleans](/source/New_Orleans).[5] Scott started rapping at the age of 14, while she was attending art school with a major in creative writing. She found writing a form of personal expression and was creating poetry before transitioning to become a musician.[3][6] At the age of 17, she moved to [Brooklyn, New York](/source/Brooklyn%2C_New_York) to pursue a career as a rapper.[2] She graduated from the Secondary School for Journalism at [John Jay High School](/source/John_Jay_Educational_Campus_(Brooklyn)) in [Park Slope, Brooklyn](/source/Park_Slope%2C_Brooklyn).[4] While in New York, Scott created the Boombox Family hip-hop movement to "preserve and progress hip-hop culture". Due to internal changes, Nitty dissolved the Boombox Family label in 2014 and began other independent business ventures. In an interview with [MSN](/source/MSN) she stated that if she hadn't pursued a career as a musician, she would have attended college to study Journalism and Broadcast Communications.[7]

In 2011, she performed at the [BET](/source/Black_Entertainment_Television) Hip Hop Awards participating in one of several cyphers among [DJ Premier](/source/DJ_Premier), [Estelle](/source/Estelle_(musician)) and [Lecrae](/source/Lecrae).[8] She was also part of the 2011 [Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival](/source/The_Brooklyn_Hip-Hop_Festival) lineup, headlined by [Q-Tip](/source/Q-Tip_(musician)).[9] In 2012, Scott performed at the Royal Arena Festival in [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland) among [Ice Cube](/source/Ice_Cube) and [Mos Def](/source/Mos_Def).[10]

Scott released her first official EP *The Boombox Diaries, Vol. 1* on August 28, 2012. The record features production from 6th Sense, [AraabMuzik](/source/AraabMuzik), Cassius Clay, DJ Tedsmooth, [!llmind](/source/!llmind) and J57, and has guest appearances by [Kendrick Lamar](/source/Kendrick_Lamar), [Action Bronson](/source/Action_Bronson) and The Kid Daytona, among others. It was supported by the lead single "Auntie Maria's Crib".[11] The EP received the Editor's Pick at DJ Booth.[11] In a positive review, Nick De Molina of [XXL](/source/XXL_(magazine)) gave it an XL rating, describing Nitty as a "conscious rapper" and praised the production as "strong and diverse".[12]

On June 16, 2013, Scott released her video for the song "Flower Child" featuring Kendrick Lamar on [MTV Jams](/source/MTV_Jams). The video shoot was completely funded through the support of fans and contributors to her Kickstarter campaign.[13] On May 23, 2014, Scott released her debut album *The Art of Chill.*

In 2017, Scott released her second full length album, *Creature!*[14]

In 2021, Scott released her third album, *Jiggy Mami.*[15]

On September 18, 2021, Scott performed at Miami Beach Pride.[16][17]

On September 25, 2021, Scott performed live in Cincinnati, Ohio for the second annual “In Her Voice” community music event hosted by Queens Village and Underworld Jazz Festival where she opened for [Sa-Roc](/source/Sa-Roc).[18]

## Musical style and influences

Scott's rapping style has been compared to that of [MC Lyte](/source/MC_Lyte), [Lauryn Hill](/source/Lauryn_Hill), [Ladybug Mecca](/source/Ladybug_Mecca), and [Big Pun](/source/Big_Pun).[3] She has stated that she is influenced by the [Wu-Tang Clan](/source/Wu-Tang_Clan), [A Tribe Called Quest](/source/A_Tribe_Called_Quest) and [Slum Village](/source/Slum_Village), among others.[6] In *Creature!*, Scott explores her Afro-[Boricua](/source/Puerto_Ricans) identity through sonic references to [Afro-Caribbean](/source/Afro-Caribbean) musical cultures; tracks on the album include collaborations with [Taíno](/source/Ta%C3%ADno) artists, recordings of indigenous [coquí](/source/Common_coqu%C3%AD) frogs, and [tumba drums](/source/Tumba_(drum)), all meant to evoke a pre-colonial past.[19][20][21][14]
