**Raffaele Celeste "Nini" Rosso** (19 September 1926[1] – 5 October 1994)[2] was an [Italian](/source/Italian_people) [jazz](/source/Jazz) [trumpeter](/source/Trumpet) and [composer](/source/Composer).[2]

## Biography

Rosso was born in [Turin](/source/Turin), Italy.[2] His parents attempted to send him to [university](/source/University), but at 19 he chose the trumpet over academia, and left home.[1] He was a [partisan](/source/Partisan_(military)) during the [World War II](/source/World_War_II) Liberation from [Nazist](/source/Nazist) and [Fascist](/source/Fascist) occupation, and operated in [Valle Maira](/source/Maira_Valley) with Giorgio Bocca[3] and Detto Dalmastro,[4] partisan commander of the [anti-fascist](/source/Anti-fascist) brigade [Giustizia e Libertà](/source/Giustizia_e_Libert%C3%A0) attached to the [Partito d'Azione](/source/Action_Party_(Italy)) of northern Italy. After his employment in a [nightclub](/source/Nightclub) was terminated by the police, he returned home, but soon after departed again to relaunch his career. He soon became one of the best-known jazz trumpeters in Italy, reaching the crest of his popularity in the 1960s.[1] He became known in the [UK](/source/United_Kingdom) in 1962 when his [recording](/source/Sound_recording_and_reproduction) of "Concerto Disperato" was [covered](/source/Cover_version) by [Ken Thorne](/source/Ken_Thorne) and his Orchestra and became a [hit](/source/Hit_record) under the title "The Theme from '[The Legion's Last Patrol](/source/The_Legion's_Last_Patrol)'".[1] Rosso's original was quickly released on the [Durium](/source/Durium) label and also made the [charts](/source/Record_chart), but was less successful than the cover. His 1965 worldwide hit "[Il Silenzio](/source/Il_Silenzio_(song))" went to number 1 in Italy, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and sold over five million copies by the end of 1967. In the US it peaked in November 1965 on position 32 of the Billboard Chart. It was awarded a [gold disc](/source/Music_recording_sales_certification).[5] He also [acted](/source/Actor) in the 1960s.

Rosso died of [lung cancer](/source/Lung_cancer) in 1994, at the age of 68.[2]
