{{New Netherland}}

The '''Nine Men''' was a council of citizens elected by the residents of [New Netherland](/source/New_Netherland) to advise its [Director General](/source/Director-General_of_New_Netherland) [Peter Stuyvesant](/source/Peter_Stuyvesant) on the governance of the colony. It replaced the previous body, the [Eight Men](/source/Eight_Men),<ref>{{cite book |last=Jacobs |first=Jaap |title=New Netherland: A Dutch Colony In Seventeenth-Century America |year=2005 |publisher=BRILL |quote=Both in the way it was set up and in the extent of its rights, the council of Twelve Men, as did the two later advisory bodies ... | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Uex2budtSOUC&pg=RA1-PA136 |isbn=90-04-12906-5 }}</ref> which itself had superseded the [Twelve Men](/source/Twelve_Men). Members of this early form of representational democracy in North America were elected in 1647, 1649, 1650 and 1652.

On July 26, 1649, eleven current and former members of the board signed the ''Petition of the Commonality of New Netherland'', which requested that the [Estates-General](/source/States_General_of_the_Netherlands) take action to encourage [economic freedom](/source/economic_freedom) and force local government like that in the Netherlands, removing the colony from the control of the [Dutch West India Company](/source/Dutch_West_India_Company). It became the basis for the municipal government when the city of [New Amsterdam](/source/New_Amsterdam) received its charter in 1653.<ref>{{cite web | title = About the City Council | publisher = New York City Council | url = http://www.council.nyc.gov/html/about/history.shtml | access-date = 2013-01-01 | url-status = dead | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20120620053608/http://www.council.nyc.gov/html/about/history.shtml | archive-date = 2012-06-20 }} </ref>
