Berman was born in New York City. She received an A.B. from the [University of Chicago](/source/University_of_Chicago) and a M.S. from the [Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism](/source/Columbia_University_Graduate_School_of_Journalism).{{cn|date=March 2026}}

She is a member of the [NOOR photo agency](/source/NOOR_photo_agency) and an associate professor at [Columbia University](/source/Columbia_University). She is a former teacher at the [International Center of Photography](/source/International_Center_of_Photography) in New York City.
