==Names==
The term ''nilupak'' means "mashed" or "pounded", from the [Tagalog](/source/Tagalog_language) verb ''lupak'', "to pound [into a pulp] (with a [mortar and pestle](/source/mortar_and_pestle))". It is also known as ''nilusak'' in [Visayan regions](/source/Visayas) with the same meaning.<ref>{{cite web |title=Nilupak na Kamoteng Kahoy |url=https://lizalyndalaodao845509895.wordpress.com/2018/03/01/nilupak-na-kamoteng-kahoy/ |website=Kitchen Delight a la Liza |access-date=April 23, 2019}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Nilupak |url=http://www.pinoyhapagkainan.com/nilupak/ |website=Hapagkainan |access-date=April 23, 2019}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Cheesey Nilupak de Balinghoy |url=https://www.atbp.ph/2016/07/02/cheesy-nilupak-de-balinghoy/ |website=Atbp.ph |access-date=April 23, 2019 |archive-date=August 5, 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160805214448/https://www.atbp.ph/2016/07/02/cheesy-nilupak-de-balinghoy/ |url-status=dead }}</ref> They were traditionally pounded in large stone or wood [mortar and pestle](/source/mortar_and_pestle).

In [Philippine Spanish](/source/Philippine_Spanish), ''nilupak'' was known as ''jalea'' ("jam"), which became spelled as ''[halaya](/source/halaya)'', ''haleya'', or ''halea'' in the native languages. This term is especially used for ''nilupak na ube'', which is now more commonly known as ''[ube halaya](/source/ube_halaya)''. Generally, however, the term ''nilupak'' is reserved for the variants made with mashed [cassava](/source/cassava) or [saba banana](/source/saba_banana)s. While the variants made from ube ([purple yam](/source/purple_yam)) is known as ''halaya''. Variants made from [sweet potato](/source/sweet_potato) and [taro](/source/taro) can be known as either ''halaya'' or ''nilupak''. Regardless, ''nilupak'' and ''halaya'' are prepared identically, varying only in their main ingredients.<ref name="luweeh">{{cite web |title=NILUPAK na UBE at GABI |url=http://luweehskitchentokyo.blogspot.com/2014/11/nilupak-na-ube-at-gabi.html |website=Tagalog Kitchen |access-date=April 23, 2019}}</ref><ref name="aia">{{cite web |title=How to make Nilupak – Cassava-Coconut Rice Cakes |url=https://www.asianinamericamag.com/2017/11/make-nilupak-cassava-coconut-rice-cakes/ |website=Asian in America |access-date=April 23, 2019}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Nilupak Recipe |url=https://www.pinoyrecipe.net/nilupak-recipe/ |website=Pinoy Recipe At Iba Pa |access-date=April 23, 2019}}</ref>
