== Biography ==
He was born in [Vyazma](/source/Vyazma) into a family of a hairdresser. As a child, after he lost a majority of his family (mother from [tuberculosis](/source/tuberculosis), father from [myocardial rupture](/source/myocardial_rupture), and both sisters), he was sent to [Saint Petersburg](/source/Saint_Petersburg) to have his uncle look after him. There, he studied in art school of [Alexander von Stieglitz](/source/Alexander_von_Stieglitz) (now [Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design](/source/Saint_Petersburg_Stieglitz_State_Academy_of_Art_and_Design)).
In spring of 1916, he was drafted into the [Western Front](/source/Western_Front_(World_War_I)) during [World War I](/source/World_War_I). After he returned, he began studying acting in [Moscow Art Theatre](/source/Moscow_Art_Theatre) under supervision of [Michael Chekhov](/source/Michael_Chekhov).
From 1945 to 1956, he was the director of Film Actor Theater-Study (now [National Film Actors' Theatre](/source/National_Film_Actors'_Theatre)).
He joined the [Communist Party](/source/Communist_Party_of_the_Soviet_Union) in 1954.
He died in [Moscow](/source/Moscow), and was buried at the [Novodevichy Cemetery](/source/Novodevichy_Cemetery).
