== Biography ==
Nigel Pickering was born Fredy Ray Pickering in 1929 in [Pontiac, Missouri](/source/Pontiac%2C_Missouri). Pickering began his music career playing guitar on the radio with a Milwaukee group called "The Westernaires" in the mid-1950s. Their show was called "Ranch House Roundup" and he was the character "Ranger Tom."<ref name="Guina - June 8">{{Cite web |last=Guinta |first=Peter |title='Spanky & Our Gang' to honor member |url=https://www.staugustine.com/story/news/local/2010/06/08/spanky-our-gang-honor-member/16230360007/ |access-date=2022-11-17 |website=St. Augustine Record |language=en-US}}</ref>

Prior to being in [Our Gang](/source/Spanky_and_Our_Gang), Nigel was a member of the folk trio The Folksters, who appeared on two 1962 episodes of [The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson](/source/The_Tonight_Show_Starring_Johnny_Carson)<ref name="Guinta - May 8" /> (November 19 and 26). The trio included Kenny Hodges,{{cn|date=November 2022}} who later played in Spanky And Our Gang. Pickering first met [Spanky McFarlane](/source/Spanky_McFarlane) and [Oz Bach](/source/Oz_Bach) at a [Hurricane party](/source/Hurricane_party) in [Chicago, Illinois](/source/Chicago), in 1965.<ref name="Guina - June 8" /> The three, along with [Malcom Hale](/source/Malcom_Hale) and [John Seiter](/source/John_Seiter), formed Spanky And Our Gang, best known for songs such as ''[Lazy Day](/source/Lazy_Day_(Spanky_and_Our_Gang_song))'', ''[Sunday Will Never Be The Same](/source/Sunday_Will_Never_Be_the_Same)'', and ''[Like To Get To Know You](/source/Like_to_Get_to_Know_You)'' that were produced between 1967 and 1969.<ref name="Guina - June 8" /> The group came to an abrupt end in 1969, following the death of Malcom Hale on October 30, 1968.<ref name="Guinta - May 8" />

After the dissolution of Our Gang, Pickering continued to perform as a solo act in clubs.
