== Life ==
Martin attended [Clee Grammar School for Boys](/source/Clee_Grammar_School_for_Boys) in Lincolnshire. He is an alumnus of the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge), reading for his undergraduate degree and his PhD at [Christ's College](/source/Christ's_College%2C_Cambridge). He was also a Research Fellow at [Downing College](/source/Downing_College) from 1971-1975.{{citation needed|date=December 2019}}

He was a senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at [Durham University](/source/Durham_University), having joined the university in 1976 as Resident Tutor of [Collingwood College](/source/Collingwood_College%2C_Durham), rising to Vice Principal before moving to [Trevelyan College](/source/Trevelyan_College) in 2000 as Principal.{{citation needed|date=December 2019}} He retired from the university in 2008. He also stood for election to the [European Parliament](/source/European_Parliament) in 1994 for [County Durham and Blaydon](/source/Durham_(European_Parliament_constituency)).<ref name="nec" />
