**Nigel Betts** is an English actor,[1] who from 2003 to 2007 appeared on the [ITV](/source/ITV_(TV_channel)) soap opera *[Emmerdale](/source/Emmerdale)* as [Eddie Hope](/source/Eddie_Hope). He also portrayed Tony in the [BBC Two](/source/BBC_Two) sitcom *[Boy Meets Girl](/source/Boy_Meets_Girl_(BBC_TV_series))* and had a recurring role as Mr Armitage in the [eighth series](/source/Doctor_Who_(series_8)) of *[Doctor Who](/source/Doctor_Who)* as well as in *[Class](/source/Class_(2016_TV_series))*, a *Doctor Who* spin-off.

Betts has also appeared in several other British television programmes such as *[Downton Abbey](/source/Downton_Abbey)*, *[Doctors](/source/Doctors_(2000_TV_series))*, *[EastEnders](/source/EastEnders)*, *[Holby City](/source/Holby_City)*, *[Coronation Street](/source/Coronation_Street)*, *[The Bill](/source/The_Bill)*, *[Ridley Road](/source/Ridley_Road_(TV_series))*, and the much acclaimed ITV series, *[Sharpe](/source/Sharpe_(TV_series))*. He also played a singing bartender in an episode of the sitcom *[As Time Goes By](/source/As_Time_Goes_By_(TV_series))* and Steve Taylor's laconic neighbor in an episode of the sitcom *[Coupling](/source/Coupling_(British_TV_series))*. In 2016 he appeared as Brian Teddern in *[The Coroner](/source/The_Coroner)*, S2:E5 “The Captain’s Pipe”. In 2009 he played Tommy in the eighth episode of the fourth series of *[Doc Martin](/source/Doc_Martin)*.

Betts has also numerous theatre credits including playing an assortment of roles for the [Royal Shakespeare Company](/source/Royal_Shakespeare_Company), including playing a variety of successful characters in the RSC's *Gunpowder* season. Other theatre credits include *[The 39 Steps](/source/The_39_Steps_(play)),* a British play adapted from the 1915 novel by [John Buchan](/source/John_Buchan) and the 1935 film by [Alfred Hitchcock](/source/Alfred_Hitchcock), and Arthur in *[War Horse](/source/War_Horse_(play))*, the [National Theatre](/source/Royal_National_Theatre)'s award-winning show in the [West End](/source/West_End_theatre). In September 2019, he appeared in an episode of the [BBC](/source/BBC_One) soap opera *[Doctors](/source/Doctors_(2000_TV_series))* as Elton Summertree. He appeared again in 2024, this time in the role of [Mellie Tyler](/source/List_of_Doctors_characters_introduced_in_2024#Mellie_Tyler).[2]
