# Nieuwendijk

**Nieuwendijk** is a village in the [Dutch](/source/Netherlands) province of [North Brabant](/source/North_Brabant). It is a part of the municipality of [Altena](/source/Altena,_North_Brabant), and lies about 8 km south of [Gorinchem](/source/Gorinchem).

## History

The village was first mentioned in 1468 as Nyewendijck, and means "new [dike](/source/Dyke_(embankment))". Nieuw (new) has been added to distinguish from [Oudendijk](/source/Oudendijk,_North_Brabant).[2] Nieuwendijk was a village of dike workers and reed cutters, and could originally be reached only by water.[3]

Nieuwendijk was home to 219 people in 1840. In 1970, the [Haringvliet](/source/Haringvliet) was closed off and the reeds disappeared.[3]

## Notable people

[Marieke Lucas Rijneveld](/source/Marieke_Lucas_Rijneveld), poet, novelist, and co-winner of the 2020 [International Booker Prize](/source/International_Booker_Prize), grew up by the River Bakkerskil in Nieuwendijk.[4]
