# Nicolas Monod

**Nicolas Monod** is a professor at [École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne](/source/%C3%89cole_Polytechnique_F%C3%A9d%C3%A9rale_de_Lausanne) (EPFL) and known for work on bounded [cohomology](/source/Cohomology), [ergodic theory](/source/Ergodic_theory), [geometry](/source/Geometry) ([CAT(0) spaces](/source/CAT(0)_space)), [locally compact groups](/source/Totally_disconnected_group) and [amenability](/source/Amenable_group).[1]

He was born in [Montreux](/source/Montreux), Switzerland.[2] He obtained his PhD from [ETH Zurich](/source/ETH_Zurich) in 2001 with thesis "Continuous Bounded Cohomology of Locally Compact Groups" written under the direction of Marc Burger.[3][4]

## Career

Monod is a Fellow of the [American Mathematical Society](/source/American_Mathematical_Society).[5] He has been awarded the [Gauss Lectureship](/source/Gauss_Lectureship)[6] and the [Berwick Prize](/source/Berwick_Prize),[7] and was an [invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians](/source/List_of_International_Congresses_of_Mathematicians_Plenary_and_Invited_Speakers) in 2006.[8] He was one of the youngest Advanced Investigator awardees in the history of the [European Research Council](/source/European_Research_Council).[9]

Monod was the president of the [Swiss Mathematical Society](/source/Swiss_Mathematical_Society) from 2014 to 2015[10] and was the director of the Bernoulli Center at [EPFL](/source/%C3%89cole_Polytechnique_F%C3%A9d%C3%A9rale_de_Lausanne) from 2014 to 2021.[1]
