Hayek is the son of Lebanese-born [Nicolas George Hayek](/source/Nicolas_Hayek), the late co-founder of the [Swatch Group](/source/The_Swatch_Group_Ltd.). He has a sister, [Nayla](/source/Nayla_Hayek).
He attended [Institut Montana Zugerberg](/source/Institut_Montana_Zugerberg) in [Zug](/source/Zug). After graduating from high school, [Matura](/source/Matura){{Broken anchor|date=2024-06-27|bot=User:Cewbot/log/20201008/configuration|target_link=Matura#Die Maturität in der Schweiz|reason= }}, Hayek studied [marketing](/source/marketing) at the [Universität St. Gallen](/source/Universit%C3%A4t_St._Gallen) for two years (without graduation). Afterwards, he spent five years in Paris. There, he studied at the Film Academy and founded a production company. The highlight of his career as a director is said to be the film ''Family Express'' (1992) with [Peter Fonda](/source/Peter_Fonda).

In 1994, Hayek returned to Switzerland and joined the [Swatch Group](/source/Swatch_Group) managed by his father, where he first worked as head of marketing at Swatch AG, then as president of the executive board, and finally as delegate of the board of directors.
