Griffiths was born in [Barry](/source/Barry%2C_Wales), Wales on 24 December 1951. Elected to Parliament in the [1993 state election](/source/1993_Western_Australian_state_election) and subsequently re-elected in the [1996](/source/1996_Western_Australian_state_election), [2001](/source/2001_Western_Australian_state_election) and [2005](/source/2005_Western_Australian_state_election) state elections, he was a member of the [Labor Party](/source/Australian_Labor_Party_(Western_Australian_Branch)).[{{cite web|url=http://www.parliament.wa.gov.au/Parliament/Memblist.nsf/WAllMembersFlat/Griffiths,+Nicholas+(Nick)+David?opendocument|title=Extract from the Western Australian Parliamentary Handbook

He held several ministerial positions after entering parliament including: Shadow [Attorney-General](/source/Attorney_General_of_Western_Australia) (1996–1999), Minister of Racing and Gaming (2001–2005) and Minister of Housing and Works (2003–2005). Following the [2005 election](/source/2005_Western_Australian_state_election), he was elected as [President of the Western Australian Legislative Council](/source/President_of_the_Western_Australian_Legislative_Council), a post which he held until 21 May 2009.
