# Nick Falkner

**Nicholas James Falkner** (born 30 September 1962) is a former English [cricketer](/source/Cricket). Falkner was a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman_(cricket)) who bowled right-arm [medium pace](/source/Seam_bowling). He was born at [Redhill, Surrey](/source/Redhill,_Surrey), and was educated at [Reigate Grammar School](/source/Reigate_Grammar_School).[1]

## Surrey

Falkner made his debut for [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club) against [Glamorgan](/source/Glamorgan_County_Cricket_Club) in a [List A](/source/List_A_cricket) match in the [1984 John Player Special League](/source/1984_John_Player_Special_League), with him making a further List A appearance against [Gloucestershire](/source/Gloucestershire_County_Cricket_Club) in that seasons [Benson & Hedges Cup](/source/1984_Benson_%26_Hedges_Cup).[2] In that same season he also made his [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) debut against [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club),[3] scoring a [century](/source/Century_(cricket)) on debut with a score of 101 [not out](/source/Not_out) in Surrey's first-innings, in a partnership of 198 with fellow debutant [Keith Medlycott](/source/Keith_Medlycott).[4] The following season, he made just one appearance for Surrey, in a List A match against Gloucestershire in the [1985 John Player Special League](/source/1985_John_Player_Special_League).

In the 1986 season, he broke into Surrey's starting eleven for the [County Championship](/source/1986_County_Championship), making eleven first-class appearances that season.[3] He scored 567 runs at an [average](/source/Batting_average_(cricket)) of 35.43,[5] with a high score of 102 against [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club).[6] He made four List A appearances in that season, against the touring [Indians](/source/India_national_cricket_team), as well as two matches against [Derbyshire](/source/Derbyshire_County_Cricket_Club) and [Nottinghamshire](/source/Nottinghamshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [NatWest Trophy](/source/1986_NatWest_Trophy) and a single match against [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [John Player Special League](/source/1986_John_Player_Special_League).[2] In the 1987 season, which was to be his last with Surrey, he made just four first-class appearances, against the touring [Pakistanis](/source/Pakistan_national_cricket_team) and three appearances in the [County Championship](/source/1987_County_Championship) against Derbyshire, [Warwickshire](/source/Warwickshire_County_Cricket_Club) and [Essex](/source/Essex_County_Cricket_Club).[3] He also appeared in five List A matches in the [1987 Benson & Hedges Cup](/source/1987_Benson_%26_Hedges_Cup), as well as two more in the [Refuge Assurance League](/source/1987_Refuge_Assurance_League).[2] Falkner played a total of sixteen first-class matches for the county, scoring 734 runs at an average of 34.95, scoring two centuries and two [half centuries](/source/Half_century).[7] In List A cricket, he made thirteen appearances, scoring 254 runs at an average of 23.09, with a high score of 58, which was one of two half centuries he made in that format.[8]

## Sussex

Having left Surrey, he joined [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club) for the 1988 season, making his debut for the county in a List A match against Essex in the [1988 Benson & Hedges Cup](/source/1988_Benson_%26_Hedges_Cup). He made two further List A appearances in that season, against [Warwickshire](/source/Warwickshire_County_Cricket_Club) and [Northamptonshire](/source/Northamptonshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [Refuge Assurance League](/source/1988_Refuge_Assurance_League).[2] His first-class debut for the county came against [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [County Championship](/source/1989_County_Championship), with him making six further first-class appearances in that season,[3] scoring 232 runs at an average of 16.57, with a high score of 58.[5] The following season, he made two first-class appearances against Surrey and Warwickshire in the [County Championship](/source/1989_County_Championship), as well as a third first-class appearance against Cambridge University.[3] He also made three List A appearances, two in the [Benson & Hedges Cup](/source/1989_Benson_%26_Hedges_Cup) against Hampshire and Glamorgan, as well as one against Warwickshire in the [Refuge Assurance League](/source/1989_Refuge_Assurance_League).[2] Falkner played a total of ten first-class matches for Sussex, scoring 308 runs at an average of 17.11, making one half century score of 55.[7] In List A cricket, he made six appearances, scoring 33 runs at an average of 5.50, with a high score of 15.[8] He played some matches for the Sussex Second XI in 1990, but thereafter he was released by the county.
