**Nicholas Darnell Cole** (born July 28, 1984) is an American former professional [football](/source/American_football) player who was a [guard](/source/Guard_(American_football)) and [center](/source/Center_(American_football)) in the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL). He played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [New Mexico State Aggies](/source/New_Mexico_State_Aggies_football) and was signed by the [Philadelphia Eagles](/source/Philadelphia_Eagles) as an [undrafted free agent](/source/Undrafted_free_agent) in 2006.

## Professional career

### Philadelphia Eagles

After going [undrafted](/source/Undrafted_sportsperson) in the [2006 NFL draft](/source/2006_NFL_draft), Cole signed with the [Philadelphia Eagles](/source/Philadelphia_Eagles) as a [free agent](/source/Free_agent). He was named the third-string center behind [Jamaal Jackson](/source/Jamaal_Jackson) and [Hank Fraley](/source/Hank_Fraley). He was later promoted to second string when Fraley was traded to the [Cleveland Browns](/source/Cleveland_Browns). He was also inserted as a [fullback](/source/Fullback_(American_football)) on short yardage and goal line situations. Besides being listed as a center, Cole is used as the primary backup at both [guard](/source/Guard_(American_football)) positions. He was the lead blocker on many plays that went for [touchdowns](/source/Touchdowns) during the [2006 season](/source/2006_NFL_season). Cole started in place of [Max Jean-Gilles](/source/Max_Jean-Gilles) when he was placed on [injured reserve](/source/Injured_reserve) in [2008](/source/2008_NFL_season).

During the 2009 offseason, he signed his one-year [restricted free agent](/source/Restricted_free_agent) tender to remain with the Eagles.[1] Cole has started in all 14 games for the Eagles in [2009](/source/2009_NFL_season), with six starts coming at left guard due to a foot injury to [Todd Herremans](/source/Todd_Herremans), and eight starts coming at right guard. After a knee injury knocked starting center [Jamaal Jackson](/source/Jamaal_Jackson) out of the week 16 game against the [Denver Broncos](/source/2009_Denver_Broncos_season), Cole shifted over to center where he played the rest of the game.[2] Jackson's injury was later revealed to be a torn [anterior cruciate ligament](/source/Anterior_cruciate_ligament) and Cole stayed at center for the remainder of the year.[3]

On April 7, 2010, Cole signed his one-year restricted free agent tender to remain with the Eagles.[4]
