**Nicholas de Pencier** is a [Canadian](/source/Canadians) cinematographer and filmmaker.[1] The spouse and professional partner of filmmaker [Jennifer Baichwal](/source/Jennifer_Baichwal) in Mercury Films,[2] he is the cinematographer and producer on most of her films as well as codirector of the films *[Long Time Running](/source/Long_Time_Running)*.[3] and *[Anthropocene: The Human Epoch](/source/Anthropocene%3A_The_Human_Epoch)*. He was also solo director of the 2016 documentary *[Black Code](/source/Black_Code_(film))*.[4]

He won a [Genie Award](/source/Genie_Award) in 2007, alongside Baichwal, [Gerry Flahive](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gerry_Flahive&action=edit&redlink=1), [Daniel Iron](/source/Daniel_Iron) and [Peter Starr](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Peter_Starr&action=edit&redlink=1) for *[Manufactured Landscapes](/source/Manufactured_Landscapes)* and a [Canadian Screen Award](/source/Canadian_Screen_Award) in 2011 alongside Baichwal, Iron and [Edward Burtynsky](/source/Edward_Burtynsky) for *[Watermark](/source/Watermark_(2013_film))*,[5] and was an [Emmy Award](/source/Emmy_Award) nominee for Outstanding Nature Programming in 2010 for "The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies", an episode of *[Nova](/source/Nova_(American_TV_series))*.

In 2025, de Pencier and Baichwal worked with the indie rock band [Rheostatics](/source/Rheostatics) to create a multimedia video presentation for the band's concerts to promote their new album *[The Great Lakes Suite](/source/The_Great_Lakes_Suite)*.[6]

## Personal life

He is the son of magazine publisher [Michael de Pencier](/source/Michael_de_Pencier), and the brother of film and television producer [Miranda de Pencier](/source/Miranda_de_Pencier).[7]
