In 1979 he undertook studies at the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge), while there he played first-class cricket for [Cambridge University Cricket Club](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club), making his debut against [Leicestershire](/source/Leicestershire_County_Cricket_Club).
