In 2010 he was the second-placed Asian at the Cadet World Championships in Baku, qualifying for the [2010 Summer Youth Olympics](/source/2010_Summer_Youth_Olympics). He was defeated in the table of 16 by Denmark's [Alexander Tsoronis](/source/Alexander_Tsoronis) and finished 9th. He was then drafted into the Hong Kong's senior fencing team and began to study at the [Institute of Vocational Education](/source/Hong_Kong_Institute_of_Vocational_Education), Chai Wan.<ref name="YP10" /> At the [2011 Asian Championships](/source/2011_Asian_Fencing_Championships), he reached the quarter-finals after seeing off Olympic silver medallist [Yuki Ota](/source/Yuki_Ota).

Choi is a mixed-race child of [Chinese](/source/China), [Korean](/source/South_Korea) and [Filipino](/source/Philippines) descent (father is Chinese-Korean mixed, mother is Filipino).
