# Nicholas Carthy

**Nicholas Carthy** (born 1957) was a Principal [Conductor](/source/Conducting) of the [Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana](/source/Orchestra_della_Svizzera_Italiana) (1993–96), is Professor of Music and Opera Music Director at the [University of Colorado](/source/University_of_Colorado), and is visiting tutor at the [Royal Northern College of Music](/source/Royal_Northern_College_of_Music).[1][2]

## Early life

Nicholas Carthy was born in [England](/source/England) in 1957.[3] He was educated at [Bedford Modern School](/source/Bedford_Modern_School),[4] the [Guildhall School of Music and Drama](/source/Guildhall_School_of_Music_and_Drama) in [London](/source/London), and in 1981 won a scholarship to study at the [Mozarteum University of Salzburg](/source/Mozarteum_University_of_Salzburg).[1][2]

## Career

Carthy was appointed [Kapellmeister](/source/Kapellmeister) at the Landestheater in [Salzburg](/source/Salzburg) where he made his [operatic](/source/Operatic) debut conducting [Mozart](/source/Mozart)'s [*Marriage of Figaro*](/source/The_Marriage_of_Figaro).[1] He was involved as an assistant at the [Salzburg Festival](/source/Salzburg_Festival) and worked closely with [Bernard Haitink](/source/Bernard_Haitink) and [Sir Georg Solti](/source/Georg_Solti).[1]

Carthy worked as an assistant to [Daniel Barenboim](/source/Daniel_Barenboim) (1990–93), with whom he was involved in a recording of Mozart's *[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)* in [Berlin](/source/Berlin),[1] at the [Chicago Symphony Orchestra](/source/Chicago_Symphony_Orchestra) for a series of Mozart productions, and in [Le Châtelet](/source/Le_Ch%C3%A2telet), [Paris](/source/Paris), for a performance of *[Wozzeck](/source/Wozzeck)*.[1][2]

Carthy was appointed [Music Director](/source/Music_director) at the [Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana](/source/Orchestra_della_Svizzera_Italiana) in 1992.[1] Under his stewardship, the orchestra performed at the [Lucerne Festival](/source/Lucerne_Festival), at the [Concertgebouw](/source/Concertgebouw,_Amsterdam), and at the [Musikverein](/source/Musikverein) in [Vienna](/source/Vienna).[1] Carthy has conducted opera productions in Vienna, [Salzburg](/source/Salzburg), [Oslo](/source/Oslo), [Stockholm](/source/Stockholm), [Winterthur](/source/Winterthur), [Milan](/source/Milan), [Rome](/source/Rome), [Naples](/source/Naples), [Eugene](/source/Eugene,_Oregon), and [Tel Aviv](/source/Tel_Aviv).[1][2]

Carthy conducted the first performances of [Thomas Adès](/source/Thomas_Ad%C3%A8s)' *[Powder Her Face](/source/Powder_Her_Face)* in Sweden, Israel, Switzerland and Italy.[1] A critical review in [*Opera* magazine](/source/Opera_(British_magazine)) described the first performance in Italy as being "conducted with brilliant musicality."[1][2]
