The lake has an area of {{Convert|37.3|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}}.<ref name=gvr>{{GVR|241763|Озеро Ничатка}}</ref> The name of the lake comes from the [Evenki language](/source/Evenki_language) word for "fish".<ref name="SET"/>

Nichatka is located to the northeast of the great [Baikal](/source/Lake_Baikal). There are no settlements on the banks of the lake. The nearest airfield is [Chara Airport](/source/Chara_Airport).<ref name="GЕ"/>

Nichatka is a long and narrow lake east of the [gorges](/source/Canyon) of the [Vitim River](/source/Vitim_River), off the eastern limit of the [Delyun-Uran Range](/source/Delyun-Uran_Range). It stretches roughly from north to south at the southern end of the [Patom Highlands](/source/Patom_Highlands) and to the north of the [Kodar Range](/source/Kodar_Range).<ref name="STM">{{cite web|url=https://maps.vlasenko.net/smtm1000/o-50.jpg|title=O-50 Chart (in Russian)|access-date=23 November 2021}}</ref>

Among the fish species in the lake, [salmon](/source/salmon), [whitefish](/source/Coregonus), [grayling](/source/Thymallus), [soroga](/source/soroga), [perch](/source/perch), [lenok](/source/lenok), [taimen](/source/taimen) and [pike](/source/Esox), deserve mention.<ref name="SET"/>
