'''Ngurno''' ("Blessing"){{sfnp|''Enc. Brit.''|1910|p=265}} is a [village](/source/villages_of_Nigeria) in far northeastern [Nigeria](/source/Nigeria). It is administered as part of the [Monguno](/source/Monguno) [LGA](/source/Local_government_areas_of_Nigeria) within [Borno State](/source/Borno_State) and was formerly an important trading center of the [Bornu Empire](/source/Bornu_Empire) and [Emirate](/source/Borno_Emirate).

==History==
Formerly known as '''Angorno''', '''Ngorno''',{{sfnp|''Enc. Brit.''|1878}} and '''Ngornu''', Ngurno was a major trading center of [Bornu](/source/Kanem%E2%80%93Bornu_Empire) during the 19th century, when its resident population was estimated at 30,000.{{sfnp|''Enc. Brit.''|1878}} This was substantially augmented on market days, when traders in [cotton](/source/cotton), [amber](/source/amber), metals, [coral](/source/coral), and [slaves](/source/slavery_in_Africa) would visit.{{sfnp|''Enc. Brit.''|1878}} At the time, [Lake Chad](/source/Lake_Chad) was nearby and frequently submerged the [floodplain](/source/floodplain) separating it from Ngurno.{{sfnp|''Enc. Brit.''|1878}} (See [Lake Chad flooded savanna](/source/Lake_Chad_flooded_savanna).) The city's importance waned following major floods that submerged the city itself and the [British conquest of the area](/source/British_conquest_of_Bornu), which they organized as part of [Nigeria](/source/British_Nigeria) under the local administration of [Maiduguri](/source/Maiduguri) to the southwest.
