**Nextstrain** is a collaboration between researchers in [Seattle](/source/Seattle), [United States](/source/United_States)[1] and [Basel](/source/Basel), Switzerland[2] which provides a collection of [open-source](/source/Open-source) tools for visualising the genetics behind the spread of [viral outbreaks](/source/Viral_outbreak).[3]

Its aim is to support public health measures and surveillance by facilitating understanding of the spread and evolution of [pathogens](/source/Pathogen). The Nextstrain platform was begun in 2015.[2] Code developed by Nextstrain is made publicly available, via, for example [GitHub.com](/source/GitHub) and its data is available and viewable in accessible form via the pages at the website.[4]

## Applications

According to their website, the Nextstrain team maintains an up-to-date genomic analysis of each of the following pathogens:[5]

- [Avian influenza](/source/Avian_influenza) - [HPAI](/source/HPAI) (North America)

- [Dengue](/source/Dengue)

- [Ebola](/source/Ebola) (Global and DRC incl. [2013-16](/source/Western_African_Ebola_virus_epidemic))

- [Enterovirus D68](/source/Enterovirus_D68)

- [HIV](/source/HIV)

- [Human metapneumovirus](/source/Human_metapneumovirus)

- [Lassa fever](/source/Lassa_fever)

- [Measles](/source/Measles)

- [Monkeypox virus](/source/Monkeypox_virus) (DRC)

- [Mumps](/source/Mumps)

- [Rabies virus](/source/Rabies_virus)

- [Respiratory syncytial virus](/source/Respiratory_syncytial_virus)

- [Rubella virus](/source/Rubella_virus)

- [SARS-CoV-2](/source/SARS-CoV-2) (also: lineage/clade % forecasts)

- [Seasonal influenza](/source/Seasonal_influenza)

- [Tuberculosis](/source/Tuberculosis)

- [West Nile virus](/source/West_Nile_virus) (Americas)

- [Yellow fever](/source/Yellow_fever)

- *[Yersinia pestis](/source/Yersinia_pestis)*

- [Zika](/source/Zika)

The above list is based on the "featured analyses" list on the main page. A complete list of analyses maintained by the Nextstrain team can be found in "core pathogens". Additional analyses can be found in the "groups" and "community" links.

### COVID-19 pandemic

Nextstrain and its results have been widely quoted during the [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic).[6][7][8][9]

## Awards

In March 2017, Nextstrain won the inaugural Open Science Prize, an initiative of the National Institutes of Health, in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).[10]

In May 2020, Nextstrain and [Trevor Bedford](/source/Trevor_Bedford_(virologist)) (Associate professor, [Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center](/source/Fred_Hutchinson_Cancer_Research_Center))[11] received a [Webby](/source/Webby_Award) Special Achievement Award for the web tool.[12]
