'''Neuzelle''' ({{langx|dsb|Nowa Cala}}, {{IPA|dsb|ˈnɔwa ˈtsala|pron}}) is a [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Germany) in the [Oder-Spree](/source/Oder-Spree) district of [Brandenburg](/source/Brandenburg), [Germany](/source/Germany), the administrative seat of ''[Amt](/source/Amt_(country_subdivision))'' (collective municipality) [Neuzelle](/source/Neuzelle_(Amt)). It is best known for [Cistercian](/source/Cistercians) [Neuzelle Abbey](/source/Neuzelle_Abbey) and its [Neuzeller Kloster Brewery](/source/Neuzeller_Kloster_Brewery).

==Geography==
Neuzelle is situated in the north of the historic [Lower Lusatia](/source/Lower_Lusatia) region near the border with [Poland](/source/Poland), about {{convert|8|km|mi|abbr=on}} south of [Eisenhüttenstadt](/source/Eisenh%C3%BCttenstadt). The municipal area along the [Dorche](/source/Dorche) creek, a tributary of the [Oder](/source/Oder) River, since 2001 also comprises the villages of Bahro, Bomsdorf, Göhlen, Henzendorf, Kobbeln, Möbiskruge, Ossendorf, Schwerzko, Steinsdorf, Streichwitz, and Treppeln. In the west, it stretches up to the [Schlaube Valley Nature Park](/source/Schlaube_Valley_Nature_Park).

==History==

The abbey was established as ''Nova Cella'' on 12 October 1268 by the [Wettin](/source/House_of_Wettin) margrave [Henry III of Lusatia](/source/Henry_III%2C_Margrave_of_Meissen) in remembrance of his deceased wife Agnes of Bohemia. Henry had acquired the strip of former [Lubusz Land](/source/Lubusz_Land) up to Fürstenberg (today's Eisenhüttenstadt) from the [Silesian](/source/Duchy_of_Silesia) duke [Bolesław II Rogatka](/source/Boles%C5%82aw_II_Rogatka) in turn for his mediation in the duke's conflict with his [Piast](/source/Silesian_Piasts) brother [Henry III the White](/source/Henry_III_the_White).

Neuzelle was a filial monastery of the Cistercian [Altzella Abbey](/source/Altzella_Abbey) (''Cella'') near [Nossen](/source/Nossen) in Henry's [Margraviate of Meissen](/source/Margraviate_of_Meissen). A first [convent](/source/convent) of brothers took residence here in 1281. From about 1300, a monastery complex was laid out, including a [Brick Gothic](/source/Brick_Gothic) [hall church](/source/hall_church), which soon became the spiritual centre of the region. The monks were granted large estates, up to [Fürstenberg am Oder](/source/Eisenh%C3%BCttenstadt) in the north and [Szydłów](/source/Szyd%C5%82%C3%B3w%2C_Lubusz_Voivodeship) (Schiedlo) beyond the Oder River in the east.

In 1367, Neuzelle with Lower Lusatia was purchased by the [Luxembourg](/source/House_of_Luxembourg) Emperor [Charles IV](/source/Charles_IV%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor) in his capacity as [King of Bohemia](/source/Kingdom_of_Bohemia). The premises were devastated during the [Hussite Wars](/source/Hussite_Wars) in 1429 and the monks killed or abducted. Rebuilt afterwards, the monastery and its extended possessions with the [Lands of the Bohemian Crown](/source/Lands_of_the_Bohemian_Crown) became part of the [Habsburg monarchy](/source/Habsburg_monarchy) in 1526. It remained [Catholic](/source/Catholic_Church) during the [Protestant Reformation](/source/Protestant_Reformation), even after the Lutheran [Electorate of Saxony](/source/Electorate_of_Saxony) had acquired the Lusatias from the [Habsburg](/source/House_of_Habsburg) Emperor [Ferdinand II](/source/Ferdinand_II%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor) by the 1635 [Peace of Prague](/source/Peace_of_Prague_(1635)). Heavily demolished in the [Thirty Years' War](/source/Thirty_Years'_War), the church was again rebuilt in a [Baroque](/source/Baroque_architecture) style including rich interior decorations quite unique in [Northern Germany](/source/Northern_Germany).

By the Final Act of the 1815 [Vienna Congress](/source/Congress_of_Vienna), Lower Lusatia fell to [Prussia](/source/Kingdom_of_Prussia) and was incorporated into the [Province of Brandenburg](/source/Province_of_Brandenburg), where it remained until 1947. The abbey was finally [securalised](/source/secularisation) by the order of King [Frederick William III](/source/Frederick_William_III_of_Prussia) two years later. The buildings were later used as an [orphanage](/source/orphanage) and a teachers' [seminary](/source/seminary) institution. Nevertheless, while the Neuzelle parish church turned Protestant, the abbey church remained Catholic and in 1947 was consecrated as [Blessed Virgin Mary](/source/Blessed_Virgin_Mary_(Roman_Catholic)) pilgrimage church. Today the monastery complex is held by a public foundation run by the State of Brandenburg.

After [World War II](/source/World_War_II), Neuzelle was incorporated into the State of [Brandenburg](/source/Brandenburg) from 1947 to 1952 and the [Bezirk Frankfurt](/source/Bezirk_Frankfurt) of [East Germany](/source/East_Germany) from 1952 to 1990. Since 1990, Neuzelle is again part of Brandenburg.
