The dynamics may refer to the structure of connections of the units of a network,<ref name="mpbkhs"/><ref name="jnng"/> to the collective internal state of the network,<ref name="jjham"/><ref name="jgnat"/>  or both. The networked systems could be from the fields of [biology](/source/biology), [chemistry](/source/chemistry), [physics](/source/physics), [sociology](/source/sociology), [economics](/source/economics), [computer science](/source/computer_science), etc. Networked systems are typically characterized as [complex systems](/source/complex_systems) consisting of many units coupled by specific, potentially changing, interaction topologies.
