**Nettur** is a village segment which comes under the jurisdiction of [Thalassery](/source/Thalassery) [municipality](/source/Municipality), in the state of [Kerala](/source/Kerala), India. It is situated in North [Thalassery](/source/Thalassery) en route to [Kannur](/source/Kannur) via [NH 17](/source/National_Highway_17_(India)). The [Anjarakandi](/source/Anjarakkandy)-[Thalassery](/source/Thalassery) state Highway passes through Nettur. Nettur is picturesquely nestled between the Kuyyali and [Anjarakandi](/source/Anjarakkandy) rivers.

## Nettur Institute

NTTF, a renowned technical training institute was established in Nettur in 1959 by the [CSI](/source/Church_of_South_India) and the *[Hilfswerk der Evangelischen Kirchen der Schweiz](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hilfswerk_der_Evangelischen_Kirchen_der_Schweiz&action=edit&redlink=1)*,[1] [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland).[2] A [bungalow](/source/Bungalow) occupied by the renowned German [missionary](/source/Missionary), scholar and [lexicographer](/source/Lexicographer), [Rev. Hermann Gundert](/source/Hermann_Gundert) better known as [Gundert](/source/Hermann_Gundert) Bungalow is situated atop Illicoon hill in Nettur, close to the present day NTTF campus.[3][4] [Rev. Hermann Gundert](/source/Hermann_Gundert) stayed in Illikkunnu, Nettur since 1839 and most of his literary works including the first English-[Malayalam](/source/Malayalam) dictionary were published during this period.[5][6] It was in Nettur that the German missionaries introduced [weaving](/source/Weaving) mills in a large scale, which later spread to [Kannur](/source/Kannur) and beyond, where the [handloom](/source/Handloom) sector evolved into a major source of revenue and employment.

## History

Nettur has a significant role to play in the evolution of [news media in Kerala](/source/Media_in_Kerala#History_of_Media_in_Kerala). It was in Nettur in the year 1847 that the first [Malayalam](/source/Malayalam) newspaper *Rajyasamacharam* was published.[3] It was published out of [Gundert](/source/Hermann_Gundert) Bungalow by [Basel Missionaries](/source/Basel_Mission) for the purpose of religious propagation until the year 1850. *Rajyasamacharam* was first published in the month of June, 1847. It was in October of the same year that another [Malayalam](/source/Malayalam) newspaper *Paschimodayam* was first published elsewhere in [Thalassery](/source/Thalassery).

## Temples

Chirakakkavu [temple](/source/Temple) is a famous [Hindu](/source/Hindu) temple located in Nettur. Renowned freedom fighter and [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament), [Nettur P Damodaran](/source/Nettur_P_Damodaran) hails from Nettur. Late [Moorkoth Kumaran](/source/Moorkoth_Kumaran), author, ardent disciple of [Sree Narayana Guru](/source/Sree_Narayana_Guru) and renowned social worker, taught at the then Middle school in Nettur, in the present premises of NTTF. The school was later upgraded and shifted to [Thalassery](/source/Thalassery) town, which is now known as [BEMP](/source/Basel_Evangelical_Mission_Parsi_High_School%2C_Thalassery) High School

## Transportation

The national highway passes through [Thalassery](/source/Thalassery) town. Goa and [Mumbai](/source/Mumbai) can be accessed on the northern side and [Cochin](/source/Cochin) and [Thiruvananthapuram](/source/Thiruvananthapuram) can be accessed on the southern side. The road to the east of [Iritty](/source/Iritty) connects to [Mysore](/source/Mysore) and [Bangalore](/source/Bangalore). The nearest railway station is [Thalassery](/source/Thalassery) on Mangalore-[Palakkad](/source/Palakkad) line. Trains are available to almost all parts of India subject to advance booking over the internet. [Kannur airport](/source/Kannur_International_Airport) is 24 km away. Both of them are international airports but direct flights are available only to Middle Eastern countries.
