The **Neptune Cable** is a 500kV and 660 [MW](/source/Megawatt)[1] [high-voltage direct current](/source/High-voltage_direct_current) [submarine power cable](/source/Submarine_power_cable) between the [Red Oak Power](/source/Red_Oak_Power) station [Sayreville, New Jersey](/source/Sayreville,_New_Jersey) and [New Cassel, New York](/source/New_Cassel,_New_York), on [Long Island](/source/Long_Island).[2] It carries 22 percent of [Long Island](/source/Long_Island)'s electricity.[3] It was developed by [Anbaric Development Partners](/source/Anbaric_Development_Partners).

The cable is managed by [Fairfield, Connecticut](/source/Fairfield,_Connecticut)-based PowerBridge, LLC.[1]

## History

The power plant was developed as part of a 2003 [request for proposal](/source/Request_for_proposal) from the [Long Island Power Authority](/source/Long_Island_Power_Authority) for new generating plants on Long Island[4] that was a response to the [Northeast blackout of 2003](/source/Northeast_blackout_of_2003) and delays by [Connecticut](/source/Connecticut) in activating the [Cross Sound Cable](/source/Cross_Sound_Cable),[5] and due to continued high peak demand over multiple years.[6][7] This solicitation also resulted in construction of the [Caithness Long Island Energy Center](/source/Caithness_Long_Island_Energy_Center); [Bethpage Energy Center](/source/Bethpage_Energy_Center); and Pinelawn Power Plant in [West Babylon, New York](/source/West_Babylon,_New_York).[7]

The cable was constructed following the Long Island Power Authority's determination that importing electricity would make more sense economically than constructing new power generating stations on Long Island.[citation needed]
