Born in [Dudley](/source/Dudley), [Worcestershire](/source/Worcestershire), Tolson began his career with [Walsall](/source/Walsall_F.C.) before moving onto [Oldham Athletic](/source/Oldham_Athletic_A.F.C.). He joined [Bradford City](/source/Bradford_City_A.F.C.) in 1993, where he stayed for four years. He helped them win promotion though was an unused substitute in their [play-off final](/source/1996_Football_League_Second_Division_play-off_final).
