==Club career==

Murphy began his career as a trainee with [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool_F.C.), turning professional in August 1999 at Liverpool, previously he had played in the same youth sides as [Steven Gerrard](/source/Steven_Gerrard), [Michael Owen](/source/Michael_Owen) and [Jamie Carragher](/source/Jamie_Carragher). He joined [Luton Town](/source/Luton_Town_F.C.) on loan in February 2000, but returned to Liverpool without making his debut.
