==Background==
When he was fifteen he took up rugby at [Boroughmuir High School](/source/Boroughmuir_High_School) after his friends convinced him to play in their team. Cochrane initially played rugby union at [centre](/source/Centre_(rugby_union)) before moving to [flanker](/source/Flanker_(rugby_union)). Whilst playing for Boroughmuir he was spotted by the Under 16s State School Scotland Rugby Union Team, which led to an academy place with [Edinburgh Rugby](/source/Edinburgh_Rugby). In 2003 Cochrane was called up to the Scotland Under-21s, captaining the team between 2004 and 2005.

===Rotherham Titans===
In 2005 he was offered his first professional contract by [RFU Championship](/source/RFU_Championship) side the [Rotherham Titans](/source/Rotherham_R.U.F.C.). During his three years at Rotherham, Cochrane made 83 appearances at [flanker](/source/Flanker_(rugby_union)) scoring 70 points and was voted player of the year in his final season for them.
===Doncaster Knights===

[Bedford Blues](/source/Bedford_Blues) moved in to sign Cochrane from Doncaster Knights at the beginning of the [2011–12 RFU Championship](/source/2011%E2%80%9312_RFU_Championship) where he changed from the position of flanker to [hooker](/source/Hooker_(rugby_union)). Cochrane quickly established himself as the starting [hooker](/source/Hooker_(rugby_union)) for the Blues, who secured second position in the [2011–12 RFU Championship](/source/2011%E2%80%9312_RFU_Championship) table with a win over [Nottingham](/source/Nottingham_R.F.C.) in the last game of the season. Whilst in preparations for the semifinals of the Championship playoffs against [London Welsh](/source/London_Welsh_RFC) Bedford agreed a new 12-month deal with Cochrane to continue playing in his new position for the 2012–13 Championship season.
