# Neil Chalmers

British zoologist and academic

**Sir Neil Robert Chalmers** (born 19 June 1942)[1] is a British [zoologist](/source/Zoologist) and academic. He is a former director of the [Natural History Museum](/source/Natural_History_Museum%2C_London) in [London](/source/London), and former [warden](/source/Warden_of_Wadham_College) of [Wadham College, Oxford](/source/Wadham_College%2C_Oxford).[2]

## Early life

Chalmers was educated at [King's College School](/source/King's_College_School), [Magdalen College, Oxford](/source/Magdalen_College%2C_Oxford) (BA), and [St John's College, Cambridge](/source/St_John's_College%2C_Cambridge) (PhD).[3]

## Academic career

From 1966 to 1969, Chalmers lectured in [zoology](/source/Zoology) at Makarere University College, Kampala, Uganda, and was scientific director at the National Primate Reserve Centre, Nairobi, Kenya from 1969 until 1970. From 1970 until 1988 he worked for the [Open University](/source/Open_University), first as a lecturer, later as dean of science. He was the Director of the Natural History Museum from 1988 until 2004.[3] He became Warden of Wadham College, Oxford, in 2004. He retired in 2012.[4]

## Honours

He was appointed [Knight Bachelor](/source/Knight_Bachelor) by [HM The Queen](/source/Elizabeth_II_of_the_United_Kingdom) in 2001.[2]
