**Sir Neil Richard Calver** (born 4 September 1963)[1] is a British [High Court judge](/source/High_Court_judge_(England_and_Wales)).

He was educated at [Dartford Grammar School](/source/Dartford_Grammar_School) and was a [chess champion](/source/Chess) in the [Kent](/source/Kent) area at under-18 and other levels. He completed a [first-class](/source/First-class_honours) [BA](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in [law](/source/Law) at [Christ's College, Cambridge](/source/Christ's_College%2C_Cambridge) in 1986.[1][2]

He was [called to the bar](/source/Call_to_the_bar) at [Gray's Inn](/source/Gray's_Inn) in 1987 and practised commercial and European law, initially from 4–5 Gray's Inn Square and then [Brick Court Chambers](/source/Brick_Court_Chambers) from 1994.[2][3] He [took silk](/source/Queen's_Counsel) in 2006 and was appointed a [recorder](/source/Recorder_(judge)) in 2009.[1]

On 1 October 2020, he was appointed a judge of the High Court, replacing [Dame Sue Carr](/source/Sue_Carr) who was promoted to the [Court of Appeal](/source/Court_of_Appeal_(England_and_Wales)), and he was assigned to the [Queen's Bench Division](/source/Queen's_Bench_Division_of_the_High_Court_of_Justice_of_England_and_Wales).[4][5] He received the customary [knighthood](/source/Knight_Bachelor) in the same year. He sits on the [Commercial Court](/source/Commercial_Court_(England_and_Wales)), [Admiralty Court](/source/Admiralty_court), [Administrative Court](/source/Administrative_Court_(England_and_Wales)) and also hears criminal cases.[4][2] In 2025 he was appointed Presiding Judge for the South Eastern region of England from 1.1.26.

In 2009, he married Marie-Eleni Demetriou (a fellow barrister) and together they have a son and a daughter. He has another daughter from a previous marriage. He supports [Charlton Athletic FC](/source/Charlton_Athletic_F.C.) and recreationally [mountain climbs](/source/Mountaineering).[1]
