**Nedstrand**[3] (locally, *Stranda*) is a village in [Tysvær Municipality](/source/Tysv%C3%A6r_Municipality) in [Rogaland](/source/Rogaland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The village is on the Nedstrand peninsula's southeast coast, at the confluence of the [Nedstrandsfjorden](/source/Nedstrandsfjorden) and [Vindafjorden](/source/Vindafjorden). The village of [Hindaråvåg](/source/Hindar%C3%A5v%C3%A5g) and the [Nedstrand Church](/source/Nedstrand_Church) both lie just west of Nedstrand.

The 0.37-square-kilometre (91-acre) village has a population (2025) of 271 and a population density of 732 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,900/sq mi).[1]

The village is a regular ferry stop on routes to the [Sjernarøyane](/source/Sjernar%C3%B8yane) islands (across the Nedstrandsfjorden) and to the village of [Hebnes](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hebnes&action=edit&redlink=1) (across the Vindafjorden in [Suldal Municipality](/source/Suldal_Municipality)). Both of those stops have other connections all over the region.[4]

## History

The area was historically part of the old [Nedstrand Municipality](/source/Nedstrand_Municipality), and was a regional customs office for the huge timber industry in the [Ryfylke](/source/Ryfylke) district. Today, the area is home to agriculture, [fish farming](/source/Fish_farming), fruit orchards, and stone quarries.[4]

In 1983, the oil rig [Alexander L. Kielland](/source/Alexander_L._Kielland_(platform)) was scuttled in the [Nedstrandsfjorden](/source/Nedstrandsfjorden) after it had capsized in the [North Sea](/source/North_Sea) in 1980, killing 123 people.
