**Edward Graham Porteous** (born 7 July 1994) is an English actor. He is known for his roles as [Mark Fowler](/source/Mark_Fowler_(2016_character)) in the [BBC](/source/BBC) [soap opera](/source/Soap_opera) *[EastEnders](/source/EastEnders)* (2016) and [Joe Tate](/source/Joseph_Tate_(Emmerdale)) in the [ITV](/source/ITV_(TV_network)) soap opera *[Emmerdale](/source/Emmerdale)* (2017–2018, 2024–present).

## Early life and education

Porteous is from [Buckinghamshire](/source/Buckinghamshire).[1] He enrolled at [Tring Park School for the Performing Arts](/source/Tring_Park_School_for_the_Performing_Arts) before going on to graduate with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in Acting from [Guildford School of Acting](/source/Guildford_School_of_Acting) in 2015.[2]

## Career

Porteous made his acting debut during an episode of the [BBC](/source/BBC) medical drama *[Holby City](/source/Holby_City)* as Rufus Lucas on 15 September 2015.[3] He then featured in a 13 episode stint of the BBC soap opera *[EastEnders](/source/EastEnders)* as [Mark Fowler](/source/Mark_Fowler_(2016_character)) between 11 August and 9 September 2016. Despite Mark having been born and brought up in the [United States](/source/United_States), Porteous did not use an [American](/source/Standard_American_dialect) accent for the role.[4]

On 13 September 2017, he first appeared in the [ITV](/source/ITV_(TV_network)) soap opera *[Emmerdale](/source/Emmerdale)* as young businessman Tom Waterhouse, a name that turned out to be an alias, the character's real name being [Joseph Tate](/source/Joseph_Tate_(Emmerdale)).[5] He received nominations at the [National Television Awards](/source/National_Television_Awards) and the [British Soap Awards](/source/British_Soap_Awards). Porteous exited *Emmerdale* in October 2018.[6] That same year, he made his feature film debut in the horror film *[Astral](/source/Astral_(film))*.

Porteous played Lord Wetherby, Henry Granville's ([Julian Ovenden](/source/Julian_Ovenden)) lover, in the first season of the 2020 [Netflix](/source/Netflix) period drama *[Bridgerton](/source/Bridgerton)*.[7] Porteous subsequently portrayed Luke in the [Disney+](/source/Disney%2B) series *[Extraordinary](/source/Extraordinary_(TV_series))*. In December 2024, Porteous reprised his role as Joe in *Emmerdale*.[8] In 2025, he appeared in an episode of *[Grantchester](/source/Grantchester_(TV_series))* as Harvey Baron.[9]
