# Ned Barraud

**Ned Barraud** (born 1976) is a New Zealand illustrator and writer.[2] He has illustrated a number of [children’s non-fiction](/source/Children's_non-fiction_literature) books about New Zealand nature.[3]

## Biography

Barraud was born in [Nelson, New Zealand](/source/Nelson,_New_Zealand) in 1976.[2]

He illustrated the *Explore & Discover* series, a collection of books by author [Gillian Candler](/source/Gillian_Candler) and published by [Potton & Burton](/source/Potton_%26_Burton).[2] *At the Beach*, the first book in the series, won the [Elsie Locke Award for Non-Fiction](/source/Elsie_Locke_Award_for_Non-Fiction) in 2013.[2][4]

For his book *What Happened to the Moa* published in 2020, Barraud worked with experts, including museum curator and zoologist [Mike Dickison](/source/Mike_Dickison), to ensure the content was as authentic as possible.[5][6]

In 2024, Barraud and author [Katie Furze](/source/Katie_Furze) collaborated on the book, *Ruru, Night Hunter*, which was published by [Scholastic](/source/Scholastic_Corporation).[7] *Ruru, Night Hunter* was shortlisted for the [New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults](/source/New_Zealand_Book_Awards_for_Children_and_Young_Adults), Elsie Locke Non-Fiction Award in 2025.[8]

Barraud currently lives in [Karori](/source/Karori).[9][3]
