Neal Hendel was born in the [United States](/source/United_States). He attended high school at the [Yeshivah of Flatbush](/source/Yeshivah_of_Flatbush). After graduating in 1969, he attended [New York University](/source/New_York_University) and graduated in 1973 with a [BA](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in [sociology](/source/sociology) and [Jewish studies](/source/Jewish_studies). He studied [Talmud](/source/Talmud) at [Yeshiva University](/source/Yeshiva_University) with Rabbi [Joseph B. Soloveitchik](/source/Joseph_B._Soloveitchik). He then studied law at [Hofstra University School of Law](/source/Hofstra_University_School_of_Law), and completed his [J.D.](/source/Juris_Doctor) degree in 1976. 
In 1983, Hendel made [aliyah](/source/aliyah) to [Israel](/source/Israel), and settled in [Beersheba](/source/Beersheba). His wife, Marcie, is a psychologist. ==Legal career==

From 1983 to 1988, he worked in the southern district prosecutor's office.
