'''Native Girls Code (NGC)''' is a [Seattle](/source/Seattle)-based program that focuses on providing computer coding skills with grounding in traditional [Indigenous knowledge](/source/Indigenous_knowledge) for [Native American](/source/Native_Americans_in_the_United_States) girls aged 12 to 18 through workshops, coaching, teaching and role modeling.<ref name="GeekWire">{{Cite news |last=McGrane |first=Clare |date=2016-08-18 |title=City of Seattle awards $320,000 to programs bringing tech to underserved communities |url=http://www.geekwire.com/2016/city-seattle-awards-320000-programs-bringing-tech-underserved-communities/ |access-date=2017-03-04 |work=GeekWire |language=en-US}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |date=2015-11-12 |title=Event to highlight work of Native Girls Code program |url=https://queenannenews.com/news/2015/nov/12/event-to-highlight-work-of-native-girls-code-progr/ |access-date=2025-01-04 |website=Queen Anne & Magnolia News |language=en-us}}</ref>

Native Girls Code is organized by the [nonprofit organization](/source/nonprofit_organization) Na'ah Illahee Fund (Mother Earth in [Chinook Jargon](/source/Chinook_Jargon)), in partnership with the [University of Washington Information School](/source/University_of_Washington_Information_School)<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |last=Lyke |first=Mary Lynn |date=July 20, 2016 |title=iSchool faculty, students help expose Native girls to tech |url=https://ischool.uw.edu/feature-stories/ischool-faculty-students-help-expose-native-girls-tech |access-date=2017-03-04 |website=Information School at University of Washington |language=en}}</ref> and the Washington NASA Space Consortium, as a way to support and perpetuate [traditional knowledge](/source/traditional_knowledge), build leadership of women and encourage greater participation of Native American students in [STEM](/source/Science%2C_technology%2C_engineering%2C_and_mathematics) fields.

The program was designed to give Native girls from tribes throughout the United States a place to develop a strong foundation in Native culture, Native science, and build the skills needed to use modern computer technologies, resulting in the creation of websites, online games and virtual worlds.<ref>{{Cite web |last= |date=2017-04-05 |title=Native Girls Code, helping diversify STEM |url=https://www.uwb.edu/news/2017/04/05/native-girls-code |access-date=2025-01-05 |website=University of Washington Bothell |language=en-US}}</ref> For example, NGC has organized workshops that combined traditional storytelling with robotics projects.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Cain |first=Sydney |date=2019-05-29 |title=Six ways Northwest Natives are using tech to save their languages |url=https://seattleglobalist.com/2019/05/29/six-ways-northwest-natives-are-using-tech-to-save-their-languages/85189 |access-date=2025-01-05 |website=[The Seattle Globalist](/source/The_Seattle_Globalist) |language=en-US}}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal |last=Tzou |first=Carrie |last2=Starks |first2=Elizabeth |last3=Meixi |last4=Rambayon |first4=Amanda |last5=Ortiz |first5=Sara Marie |last6=Peterson |first6=Shawn |last7=Gladstone |first7=Paradise |last8=Tail |first8=Ellie |last9=Chang |first9=Arianna |last10=Andrew |first10=Elise |last11=Nevarez |first11=Xochitl |last12=Braun |first12=Ashley |last13=Bang |first13=Megan |date=2020-07-01 |title=Codesigning With Indigenous Families and Educators: Creating Robotics Education That Contributes to Indigenous Resurgence |url=https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/24758779.2020.12318741 |journal=Connected Science Learning |volume=2 |issue=3 |doi=10.1080/24758779.2020.12318741|url-access=subscription }}</ref>

== Awards and grants ==
In 2016 NGC was awarded a grant through the [City of Seattle's](/source/Seattle) Technology Matching Fund, aimed at increasing digital equity among underrepresented Seattle citizens.<ref name="GeekWire"/> [Google](/source/Google) has been a major funder of the program and [Facebook](/source/Facebook) has donated laptops and filming equipment to NGC.<ref name=":0" />

In 2023, the Seattle Foundation awarded a grant to NGC through its Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) program, which supported development of a digital kiosk about the history of the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center in Seattle.<ref>{{Cite web |last= |date=2023-03-03 |title=Native Girls Code’s Digital Kiosk |url=https://naahillahee.org/our-blog/kiosk-at-dbs-native-girls-code/ |access-date=2025-01-05 |website=Na'ah Illahee Fund |language=en-US}}</ref>
