The **National Democrats Union**, also known as the **Alliance of National Democrats** ([Armenian](/source/Armenian_language): Ազգային ժողովրդավարների միություն, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Armenian): *Azgayin zhoghovrdavarneri miut’yun*) is an [Armenian](/source/Armenia) [political party](/source/Political_party).[4]

## History

The National Democrats Union was founded on 19 May 2001 by Arshak Sadoyan. Sadoyan was a previous member of the [National Democratic Union](/source/National_Democratic_Union_(Armenia)). However, Sadoyan left the National Democratic Union to subsequently establish his own party.[5]

On 25 May 2003, Arshak Sadoyan was elected a deputy of the [National Assembly](/source/National_Assembly_of_Armenia) by the proportional list of the [Justice](/source/Justice_(Armenia)) electoral coalition, following the [2003 Armenian parliamentary election](/source/2003_Armenian_parliamentary_election). Sadoyan was a member of the Justice coalition.[6]

The party stated its intention to participate in the [2012 Armenian parliamentary elections](/source/2012_Armenian_parliamentary_election), however, the party ultimately failed to register.[7]

The party chose not to participate in the [2017 Armenian parliamentary election](/source/2017_Armenian_parliamentary_election) due to financial constraints.[8][9] Prior to the [2018 Armenian parliamentary election](/source/2018_Armenian_parliamentary_election), the party announced that it would be open to the idea of creating a new political alliance with other parties, however, the National Democrats Union ultimately did not participate.[10] The party endorsed [Armen Sarksyan](/source/Armen_Sarksyan) for the [presidency](/source/2018_Armenian_presidential_election).[11]

The party announced its intentions to participate in the [2021 Armenian parliamentary elections](/source/2021_Armenian_parliamentary_election) as part of the [Free Homeland Alliance](/source/Free_Homeland_Alliance).[12][13] Following the election, the alliance won just 0.32% of the popular vote, failing to win any seats in the [National Assembly](/source/National_Assembly_of_Armenia). Currently, the party acts as an [extra-parliamentary](/source/Extra-parliamentary) force.

Arshak Sadoyan stated his opposition to either [Nikol Pashinyan](/source/Nikol_Pashinyan) or [Robert Kocharyan](/source/Robert_Kocharyan) from becoming prime minister.[14]

## Ideology

The party supports increased involvement of the [Armenian Diaspora](/source/Armenian_Diaspora) in the economic development of Armenia.[15] The party also supports developing a modernized military, increasing wages, allowing the Armenian Diaspora to vote in national elections from abroad, and encourages the self-determination of [Artsakh](/source/Republic_of_Artsakh).[14][16]
