==Military career==
Stevenson was [commissioned](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) as an [ensign](/source/Ensign_(rank)) in the [1st Regiment of Foot](/source/Royal_Scots) in 1858.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=22176|page=3904|date=24 August 1858}}</ref> In 1863 he was transferred to the [87th Regiment of Foot](/source/87th_(Royal_Irish_Fusiliers)_Regiment_of_Foot).<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=22701|page=379|date=23 January 1863}}</ref> He was appointed assistant adjutant and quartermaster-general for Cork District in 1880<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=24858|page=2646|date=25 June 1880}}</ref> and then, having served as Assistant-Adjutant and Quartermaster-General on the Staff, he was appointed Deputy Adjutant-General in [Ireland](/source/Ireland) in 1884.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=25407|page=4589|date=24 October 1884}}</ref> He was appointed General Officer Commanding [Northern District](/source/Northern_Command_(United_Kingdom)) in 1889, General Officer Commanding [North Eastern District](/source/Northern_Command_(United_Kingdom)) later in the year and [Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey](/source/Lieutenant_Governor_of_Guernsey) in 1894.<ref>[http://www.worldstatesmen.org/Guernsey.html World Leaders]</ref> It was in that capacity that he went to [Westminster Abbey](/source/Westminster_Abbey) in 1898 to attend former Prime Minister [Gladstone](/source/William_Ewart_Gladstone)'s funeral.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=26980|page=3849|date=22 June 1898}}</ref>
