== Biography ==
Simonds was born in 1775, in [Windsor, Vermont](/source/Windsor%2C_Vermont). He later moved to [St. Charles, Missouri](/source/St._Charles%2C_Missouri) in February 1801, living on property gained from a Spanish grant. He served as St. Charles County Sheriff and also owned a tavern, the city's [mail coach](/source/mail_coach),<ref name=":0" /> and a hotel.<ref>{{Cite news |date=23 July 1814 |title=St. Charles Hotel |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/249515311/?match=1&terms=Nathaniel%20Simonds |access-date=2025-12-27 |work=Missouri Gazette and Public Advertiser |pages=4}}</ref>

A [Democratic-Republican](/source/Democratic-Republican_Party), Simonds was appointed as the second [State Treasurer of Missouri](/source/State_Treasurer_of_Missouri), in September 1821. He was paid an annual $730, in quarterly installments.
