# Nathanael Chalmers

**Nathanael Chalmers** (22 August 1830 – 2 December 1910) was a New Zealand pastoralist, explorer, politician, planter, sugar miller and magistrate. He was born in [Rothesay](/source/Rothesay,_Argyll_and_Bute), on the island of [Bute](/source/Isle_of_Bute), Scotland on 22 August 1830. He was a member of the [Legislative Council of Fiji](/source/Legislative_Council_of_Fiji) from 1879 to 1883.[1]

Chalmers was the first European to see the South Island of New Zealand inland lakes of [Wakatipu](/source/Lake_Wakatipu), [Wānaka](/source/Lake_W%C4%81naka) and [Hāwea](/source/Lake_H%C4%81wea) as well as the valleys of the [Upper Clutha River](/source/Clutha_River) in 1853.[2]
