Prior to his senior debut, McSweeney was named in Australia's squad for the [2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup](/source/2018_Under-19_Cricket_World_Cup).[5] He scored a match-winning 156 runs against [Papua New Guinea](/source/Papua_New_Guinea_Under-19_cricket_team) during the competition.[6] He made his [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) debut for [Queensland](/source/Queensland_cricket_team) against [Tasmania](/source/Tasmania_cricket_team) in the [2018–19 Sheffield Shield season](/source/2018%E2%80%9319_Sheffield_Shield_season)[7] and made his senior [Twenty20](/source/Twenty20) debut in January 2020 for [Melbourne Renegades](/source/Melbourne_Renegades) in the [Big Bash League](/source/2019%E2%80%9320_Big_Bash_League_season).[8] He was signed by the [Brisbane Heat](/source/Brisbane_Heat) as a local replacement player for [Marnus Labuschagne](/source/Marnus_Labuschagne) for the [2021–22 Big Bash League season](/source/2021%E2%80%9322_Big_Bash_League_season)[9] before being signed to a longer-term contract by the team following a series of successful performances, receiving a two-year deal with the club.[10]

In May 2021, McSweeney moved to [South Australia](/source/South_Australia_cricket_team) ahead of the 2021/22 domestic season, making his [List A](/source/List_A_cricket) debut in September 2021 in the [2021–22 Marsh One-Day Cup](/source/2021%E2%80%9322_Marsh_One-Day_Cup).[11][12] He scored his maiden first-class century in December 2022 against Tasmania.[13]

In March 2023, McSweeney was announced as the captain of [Australia A](/source/Australia_A_cricket_team) for their [tour of New Zealand](/source/Australia_A_cricket_team_in_New_Zealand_in_2022%E2%80%9323).[14] Playing in the first unofficial Test, he scored 50 in the first innings and 69 [not out](/source/Not_out) in the second.[15]

In the absence of regular captain [Usman Khawaja](/source/Usman_Khawaja), McSweeney captained [Brisbane Heat](/source/Brisbane_Heat) to their second [Big Bash League](/source/Big_Bash_League) title during the [2023–24 season](/source/2023%E2%80%9324_Big_Bash_League_season).[16] After scoring 307 runs at an average of 51.16 he was named in the [2023–24 Marsh One-Day Cup](/source/2023%E2%80%9324_Marsh_One-Day_Cup) team of the tournament.[17]

In April 2024, McSweeney was named as the captain of South Australia for the 2024–25 Australian domestic season.[18] He scored his maiden List A century in October 2024, making 137 runs in 131 balls against Queensland.[19]

McSweeney led South Australia to the [Sheffield Shield](/source/Sheffield_Shield) and [One-Day Cup](/source/One-Day_Cup_(Australia)) titles in his first season as captain, delivering South Australia their first Sheffield Shield title in 29 years, their first One Day title in 13 years.[20][21] South Australia were the first recipients of the newly introduced [Dean Jones Trophy](/source/Dean_Jones_Trophy) as winners of the One-Day Cup.

In the [2025-26 Sheffield Shield season](/source/2025-26_Sheffield_Shield_season), McSweeney led South Australia to the Sheffield Shield title once again, this time winning the Final against [Victoria](/source/Victoria_cricket_team) by 56 runs, South Australia's first time going back-to-back in the Sheffield Shield in the competition's history.[22] In the match, McSweeney scored 72 runs for the game, which included 52 in South Australia's first innings.[23]

## International career

McSweeney captained Australia A against [the touring India A side](/source/Indian_cricket_team_in_Australia_in_2024%E2%80%9325#Tour_matches) during the 2024–25 season.[24] He opened the batting for the first time in first-class cricket in the second match of the series, having been earmarked for a role as opener for the full Australian side later in the summer.[25][26] At the conclusion of the match, he was named in [Australia](/source/Australia_national_cricket_team)'s team to play against the [touring Indian Test side](/source/Indian_cricket_team_in_Australia_in_2024%E2%80%9325).[27][28][29][30]

McSweeney made his Test debut in the first match of the series at [Perth](/source/Perth_Stadium). He made 10 runs in his first innings in international cricket before recording a [duck](/source/Duck_(cricket)) in his second. He played in the second and third matches of the series, making scores of 39, 10 [not out](/source/Not_out), nine and four before being dropped ahead of the fourth Test match, making way for debutant [Sam Konstas](/source/Sam_Konstas).[31] The decision caused some controversy, coming after only three matches.[32][33][34][35]

In January 2025, McSweeney was recalled to the Test squad as part of a two-Test series [against Sri Lanka](/source/Australian_cricket_team_in_Sri_Lanka_in_2024%E2%80%9325),[36] but didn't play in either match.

## Playing style

Usually a conservative batter, McSweeney has the ability to be aggressive when batting with the [lower order](/source/Batting_order_(cricket)#Lower_order_or_tail), most notably scoring 28 runs from an over to reach a century in a tenth-wicket [partnership](/source/Partnership_(cricket)) with [Harry Conway](/source/Harry_Conway) in March 2024.[37] He is a part-time [off break](/source/Off_break) bowler, often being called upon to break partnerships.[24][38]
