# Nathan Kemp

**Nathan Robert Kemp** (born 19 January 1979) is a New Zealand former professional [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player.

## Rugby career

A product of [St Peter's College, Auckland](/source/St_Peter's_College,_Auckland), Kemp played senior rugby for [Ponsonby](/source/Ponsonby_RFC) straight out of school and later captained the club during a period of dominance in the [Gallaher Shield](/source/Gallaher_Shield).[1][2]

Kemp won an [NPC](/source/National_Provincial_Championship_(1976%E2%80%932005)) title in his first year with [Auckland](/source/Auckland_Rugby_Union) in 2003 and the following season made two [Super 12](/source/Super_Rugby) appearances for the [Blues](/source/Blues_(Super_Rugby)), both off the bench. After two years at Auckland, Kemp made the decision to move on, having received limited opportunities behind preferred hookers [Keven Mealamu](/source/Keven_Mealamu) and [Derren Witcombe](/source/Derren_Witcombe).[3]

In 2005, Kemp captained [Manawatu](/source/Manawatu_Rugby_Union) in a tour match against the [British and Irish Lions](/source/British_and_Irish_Lions).[4]

Kemp earned a place on the [Hurricanes](/source/Hurricanes_(rugby_union)) development roster while at Manawatu, but opted to play professional rugby in the United Kingdom, where he had stints with the [Cornish Pirates](/source/Cornish_Pirates) and [Jersey](/source/Jersey_Reds), as well as a player-coach role with [Wimbledon](/source/Wimbledon_RFC).[5][6] He returned to New Zealand in 2015 and took up a position as director of rugby for Ponsonby.[1]
