==Playing career==

===Junior===
Beaulieu was drafted by the [Saint John Sea Dogs](/source/Saint_John_Sea_Dogs) in the fourth round, 68th overall, of the 2008 [Quebec Major Junior Hockey League](/source/Quebec_Major_Junior_Hockey_League) (QMJHL) Midget Draft.<ref name=qmjhl>{{cite web|title=Nathan Beaulieu|url=http://en.lhjmq.qc.ca/roster/show/id/7482|publisher=[Quebec Major Junior Hockey League](/source/Quebec_Major_Junior_Hockey_League)|access-date=June 3, 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120209124238/http://en.lhjmq.qc.ca/roster/show/id/7482|archive-date=February 9, 2012|url-status=dead}}</ref> When he began his junior career with the Sea Dogs in [2008–09](/source/2008%E2%80%9309_QMJHL_season), his father [Jacques](/source/Jacques_Beaulieu_(ice_hockey)) was the team's head coach. His father was fired by the team and replaced with [Gerard Gallant](/source/Gerard_Gallant) in 2009, an incident which caused Beaulieu to consider leaving the team. He decided to remain with Saint John after speaking with Gallant.<ref name=father>{{cite web|title=Beaulieu in pursuit of rare father/son accomplishment|url=http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com/front/article/1408746|work=[Telegraph Journal](/source/Telegraph_Journal)|date=May 23, 2011|access-date=June 3, 2011|last=Klinkenberg|first=Marty}}</ref>

During the [2010–11](/source/2010%E2%80%9311_QMJHL_season), Beaulieu established himself as a top prospect for the [2011 NHL entry draft](/source/2011_NHL_entry_draft), and was nominated for the [Mike Bossy Trophy](/source/Mike_Bossy_Trophy), awarded to the QMJHL's top professional prospect;<ref name=bossy>{{cite web|title=QMJHL Announces finalists for Golden Puck Awards|url=http://www.nhl.com/ice/blogpost.htm?id=544|website=NHL.com|date=March 22, 2011|access-date=June 3, 2011|last=Morreale|first=Mike G.}}</ref> he lost the award to [Sean Couturier](/source/Sean_Couturier).<ref name=winners>{{cite web|title=Islanders, Rocket goalie among QMJHL award winners|url=http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/Sports/2011-04-07/article-2407976/Islanders,-Rocket-goalie-among-QMJHL-award-winners|newspaper=[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian_(Charlottetown))|date=April 7, 2011|access-date=June 3, 2011|last=Beacon|first=Bill}}</ref> Beaulieu was ranked fifth among North American skaters by the [NHL Central Scouting Bureau](/source/NHL_Central_Scouting_Bureau) in its final rankings, an improvement from his mid-season ranking of ninth.<ref name=nhldraftprofile>{{cite web|title=Beaulieu, Nathan|url=http://www.nhl.com/ice/draftprospectdetail.htm?dpid=9432&tab=prf|website=NHL.com|access-date=June 3, 2011}}</ref> Saint John won the [QMJHL championship](/source/President's_Cup_(QMJHL)) and moved on to the [2011 Memorial Cup](/source/2011_Memorial_Cup). Beaulieu scored the winning goal in the team's first game of the tournament against hosts [Mississauga St. Michael's Majors](/source/Mississauga_St._Michael's_Majors).<ref name=father /> The Sea Dogs met the Majors again in the championship game of the tournament and won 3–1 to capture the Memorial Cup. ===Professional===
Beaulieu made his professional debut in the [2012–13](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_NHL_season) season with the Canadiens' [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) (AHL) affiliate, the [Hamilton Bulldogs](/source/Hamilton_Bulldogs_(AHL)). He later played his first NHL game with the Canadiens on March 30, 2013 versus the [New York Rangers](/source/New_York_Rangers).<ref>{{Cite tweet|user=CanadiensMTL|number=317681652933472257|date=March 29, 2013|title=Head coach Michel Therrien confirmed that Nathan Beaulieu will play tomorrow against the Rangers and Carey Price will get the start in goal.}}</ref>

In his fifth season with the Canadiens in [2017–18](/source/2017%E2%80%9318_NHL_season), Beaulieu posted career highs in his second full NHL year, appearing in 74 games with 4 goals and 24 points.

As an impending restricted free agent from the Canadiens, on June 17, 2017, Beaulieu was traded by Montreal to the [Buffalo Sabres](/source/Buffalo_Sabres) in exchange for the Sabres' third-round pick in the [2017 NHL entry draft](/source/2017_NHL_entry_draft).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.nhl.com/canadiens/news/nathan-beaulieu-traded-to-sabres/c-289970304|title=Nathan Beaulieu traded to Sabres|publisher=Montreal Canadiens|via=NHL.com|date=June 17, 2017|access-date=July 25, 2024}}</ref> On July 31, 2017, he was signed to a two-year $4.8 million contract with the Sabres.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/sabres/news/sabres-beaulieu-agree-to-2-year-contract/c-290551918 | title = Sabres, Beaulieu agree to two-year contract | publisher = Buffalo Sabres | via = NHL.com | date = July 31, 2017 | last1 = Kardaman | first1 = Katelyn | last2 = Cohen | first2 = Jami | access-date = August 1, 2017}}</ref>

During his second season with the Sabres in [2018–19](/source/2018%E2%80%9319_NHL_season), Beaulieu's role was reduced and was regularly a healthy scratch. Through the mid-point of the season, Beaulieu requested to be traded due to his limited play while in a contract year.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.wkbw.com/sports/sabres/report-sabres-defenseman-nathan-beaulieu-requests-trade | title = Sabres defenseman Nathan Bealieu requests trade | work = [WKBW](/source/WKBW-TV) | last = Bove | first = Matt | date = January 16, 2019 | access-date = January 18, 2019}}</ref> He remained with the team featuring in 30 games for 7 points before he was ultimately dealt by the Sabres at the trade deadline to the [Winnipeg Jets](/source/Winnipeg_Jets) for a six-round pick in the [2019 NHL entry draft](/source/2019_NHL_entry_draft) on February 25, 2019.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/jets/news/jets-acquire-nathan-beaulieu-from-the-buffalo-sabres/c-305216396 |title = Jets acquire Nathan Beaulieu from the Buffalo Sabres | publisher = Winnipeg Jets | via = NHL.com | date = February 25, 2019 | access-date = February 25, 2019}}</ref>

With Beaulieu approaching arbitration rights as a restricted free agent the Jets declined to tender a qualifying offer, releasing him as a free agent on June 25, 2019.<ref>{{Cite web| url = https://www.tsn.ca/winnipeg-jets-won-t-qualify-defencemen-joe-morrow-nathan-beaulieu-1.1328361 | title = Jets won't qualify Beaulieu, Morrow | website = TSN.ca | date = June 25, 2019 | access-date = June 25, 2019}}</ref> On July 1, 2019, Beaulieu opted to re-sign with the Jets on a cheaper one-year, $1 million contract.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/jets/news/jets-sign-nathan-beaulieu-to-a-one-year-contract/c-308145752 | title = Jets sign Nathan Beaulieu to one-year contract | publisher = Winnipeg Jets | via = NHL.com | date = July 1, 2019 | access-date = July 1, 2019}}</ref> Later that season, on February 16, 2020, Beaulieu scored his first goal as a Winnipeg Jet- the game-winner- in a 3–2 home ice victory against the [Chicago Blackhawks](/source/Chicago_Blackhawks).<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/sports/beaulieus-1st-goal-of-season-lifts-jets-over-blackhawks-3-2/2220558/|website=[NBC Chicago](/source/WMAQ-TV)|title=Beaulieu's 1st Goal of Season Lifts Jets Over Blackhawks 3-2|date=February 16, 2020 |access-date=July 25, 2024}}</ref>

During his fourth year with the Jets, in the [2020–21](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_NHL_season) season, Beaulieu was traded to the [Pittsburgh Penguins](/source/Pittsburgh_Penguins) in exchange for a conditional [2022](/source/2022_NHL_entry_draft) seventh-round draft pick on March 21, 2022.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/penguins/news/penguins-acquire-defenseman-nathan-beaulieu-for-conditional-7th-rd-pick/c-332074942 | title = Penguins acquire Nathan Beaulieu in exchange for conditional pick | publisher = Pittsburgh Penguins | via = NHL.com | date = March 21, 2022 | accessdate = March 21, 2022}}</ref>

As a free agent from the Penguins having not featured for the club, Beaulieu went unsigned over the summer. He initially joined the [Anaheim Ducks](/source/Anaheim_Ducks) on a [professional tryout](/source/Ice_hockey_contract) (PTO) in preparation for the {{NHL Year|2022}} season before agreeing to a one-year, $850,000 contract following a successful training camp on October 1, 2022.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/ducks/news/ducks-sign-defenseman-beaulieu-to-one-year-contract/c-335971326 | title = Ducks sign defenseman Beaulieu to one-year contract | publisher = Anaheim Ducks | via = NHL.com | date = October 1, 2022 | accessdate = October 1, 2022}}</ref> In his lone season with the Ducks, Beaulieu added just 4 assists through 52 regular season games from the blueline.

Leaving the Ducks as a free agent, Beaulieu for the second consecutive season was signed to a PTO, accepting an invitation to the [Carolina Hurricanes](/source/Carolina_Hurricanes)' training camp on August 22, 2023.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/news/canes-sign-beaulieu-to-professional-tryout/c-345638064 | title = Canes sign Beaulieu to tryout | publisher = Carolina Hurricanes | last = Ruff | first = Walt | via = NHL.com | date = August 22, 2023 | accessdate = August 22, 2023}}</ref> Despite this, Beaulieu would ultimately sign overseas with [EHC Kloten](/source/EHC_Kloten) of the [Swiss](/source/Switzerland)-based [National League](/source/National_League_(ice_hockey)) (NL) for the [2023–24](/source/2023%E2%80%9324_National_League_(ice_hockey)_season) season.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://ehc-kloten.ch/news/news/neuzugang-nathan-beaulieu | title = Neuzugang Nathan Beaulieu | website = EHC Kloten | date = November 1, 2023 | accessdate = November 1, 2023|language=de}}</ref>

On June 28, 2024, Beaulieu joined [Barys Astana](/source/Barys_Astana) of the [Kontinental Hockey League](/source/Kontinental_Hockey_League) (KHL) on a one-year contract.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://ehc-kloten.ch/news/news/neuzugang-nathan-beaulieu | title = 2011 Habs 1st rounder Nathan Beaulieu signs with KHL's Barys Astana | website = [The Hockey News](/source/The_Hockey_News) | date = June 28, 2024 | accessdate = July 25, 2024|last = O'Brien | first = Derek}}</ref> On October 18 of the same year, following just 8 appearances with Barys, Beaulieu was suddenly released by the club along with fellow North American ex-NHLers [Michael McLeod](/source/Michael_McLeod_(ice_hockey)) and [Will Butcher](/source/Will_Butcher).<ref>{{cite web| url = https://thehockeynews.com/international/latest-news/barys-astana-terminates-contracts-of-nathan-beaulieu-will-butcher-michael-mcleod | title = Barys Astana Terminates Contracts of Nathan Beaulieu, Will Butcher, Michael McLeod | website = [The Hockey News](/source/The_Hockey_News) | date = October 18, 2024 | accessdate = October 24, 2024|last = O'Brien | first = Derek}}</ref> Beaulieu was later signed to a contract with Slovak club, [HC Nové Zámky](/source/HC_Nov%C3%A9_Z%C3%A1mky) of the [Tipos Extraliga](/source/Tipos_Extraliga), however did not feature with the club.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.instagram.com/p/DCHolCTtd35/ | title = Canadian Beaulieu signs with Nove Zamky | publisher = [Instagram](/source/Instagram) | date = November 9, 2024 | accessdate = November 9, 2024 | language =sk}}</ref>
